AMD Phenom II x4 975 Idle Temperature Question

Thread Starter
I just upgraded my from AMD Athlon II x4 620 to a AMD Phenom II x4 975. The new CPU, however, didn't come with a heatsink/fan so I thought to buy a new one rather then use my old one.

I'm using CoreTemp to monitor the CPU and the temperatures are quite a bit higher then they were with the old CPU. Currently they hover around 120 Fahrenheit when idle. I haven't tried any gameplay yet as I'm unsure if the temperature is already to high, although CoreTemp claims it can go up to 194 Fahrenheit.

Also problematic is that the new heatsink/fan was very difficult to attach to the CPU/Motherboard- so I'm not totally certain it's completely making contact, that and it came with pre-applied thermal paste- so I don't know if that might be causing the problem. I suppose I could replace it with my old heatsink/fan but I'm not sure that's the best option.

I can't really afford to buy a more expensive heatsink/fan right now so my question is twofold: Is the temperature too high and if so am I risking damage if I leave it as is for the immediate future?

48c seems about right to me, my 955 was 45c on idle using the stock heatsink. just keep it under 62c and you'll be fine. whenever you get the money look into the Hyper 212 it's 10 bucks more then what you paid but it'll keep that proccessor cool and hopefully you got the case for it smile.gif
