PWM fans and water cooling.

Looking to hear from people who use PWM fans with their water loop. I know a perfect way to set it up, but is it worth while? I'm Planning a loop, target rad is an RX 360 for a low noise CPU loop. I was going to use low/med yate loons or XSPC fan's with a controller...but PWM also sounds like a good idea. Going for a quiet loop. opinions/experience please, Thank you.

PWM fan controller or Mobo's PWM control? You'd need a splitter for the latter, which could cause power-draw issues.

I have a way of doing that will work, no power issue's or anything. Is it worth it though? I know PWM is great in air cooling, but is it as usefull in water cooling?

EDIT:Might as well just explain the how I would if it was worth it.


Doing two loops total, One for GPUand the second one for CPU mobo and RAM.Going to do the CPU loop only, and will add the mobo/ram later. Going to use an RX360(maybe a 480..not the point though) rad. I want to use This to power the CPU loop. It will split only the PWM from the mobo and power the fans from a molex so no power issue's will arise. They make one with 4 leads if I go for the larger rad.

for the second loop I would use This plugged into the warmer of the two cards(Xfire/SLI) along with the above PWM cable so it it will power 3-4 fans with out power problems coming up.

I could use ASUS fan software, speed fan or a dozen other programs to adjust the CPU PWM fan profile, and for the GPU, MSI after burn, EVGA persision and a dozen other program will allow the tweaking of GPU fan profile. so there you go, that's how but "is it worth it?" Thanks for any advice in advance!

I use PWM to control my Swiftech MCP35x pumps but I do not use PWM for my radiator fans. There just aren't a lot of great PWM fans out there.

How dose the pump work on PWM function if I can ask, dose the pump speed changing based on load actually help temps?

As said, there are few and far between fans that take well to PWM control. Or any good fans fitted with a PWM plug from the factory. Delta makes a few, iirc.

I tried a PWM controller back in 2009...no luck. All of the fans made horrible noises when under-powered. My current setup just uses an undervolt harness. 5's, 7's and 12's. Quiet, but no ability to step it up.
You'll be hard-pressed to find a better controller than the Lamptron Fan-Atic. Volt options on the fly. Only downside is manual control, not automatic.

I have some experience with a few PWM fans that worked well. I have used PWM lots of time's on CPU coolers with great success, but is it the same with a water loop? If it is, I will gladly shell out 15-20 a fan and be thrilled to death.... if it works the same...

It's the same? With air cooling, you're moving air through fins. With liquid cooling, you're moving air through fins. The only difference would be the FPI of your target cooling device. The higher the fin density, the more static pressure, the harder to find a good fan which can be quiet all while providing decent CFM with good stat pressure.

Ok, more technical question then lol.

The difference is with water cooling the temp of your loop will equalize. Wouldn't there be a delay between the fans spinning up and loop responding to the increased airflow affect how useful PWM or auto adjusting fans work? I know the size of the loop would be a variable...that's why I wanted to hear from people who have set it up and used it. I can see both side's of the coin, One being it works wounder, epic performance minimal noise pollution. On the other hand it could be a total waste of time lol.

I wouldn't think that delay would be anything you could change whether the control was automatic or manual. The time it takes for RPM adjustment between PWM, RPM control, and volt reduction is probably fractionally different. I don't think you're going to see any major cooling ability differences (assuming you find PWM fans that match specs of regular fans you would use) between the types of fan control.
