I want to overclock Athlon 2.8+, where to start?

Thread Starter
Hi,
my CPU is a AMD Athlon 2.8+, which I want to overclock because I want to play Medieval 2 Total War.
I plan to just read a lot of guides first and get ready.
Any thoughts or ideas? What is important? What to notice?
How dangerous is that by the way?
Is this model a good one to overclock?

Thanks in advande

Main thing to check before you start overclocking is to make sure you have very good cooling. Then, you need to check your bios to see what kind of adjustments you can make such as FSB, voltages, memory timings, multipliers, etc.

It is a 2800+, with 2050 MHz.
So how far can I push it?
Right now I have an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2.
Thanks

That Albatron is a fine motherboard for overclocking and very underated. I still have a KX18D ProII with a Xp2500+Barton gooing strong in the office at work.

As for how far you are going to get it, the RAM is going to govern that quite alot.
You want to be really running 1:1 fsb to DRAM with as tight as you can go on the memory timmings...The Xp's just love it here for the best performance.

A very realistic fsb would be in the 230-235MHz range..memory pending.
Once you drop another module in and have the dual channel up and running, the performance gain will be noticable.

Temperature on the CPU (100% load)should be restricted to below 50celcius and preference for around the 45celcius mark(for durability of CPU) temperature's above this can be sustained but doing so will reduce the effective life of the CPU alot.
Vcores of 1.7v to 1.75 are accepted as the normal.

Thanks for the tips. : )
You said, that my RAM is going to govern that.
Right now I have 2x256MB DDR400.
Since I have to buy new RAM this option is totally open.
I'll have to go with 2x512MB. (Not two gigs.)

What RAM to buy?
a)Not worth it, keep using the old.
b)DDR400
c)DDR333 (cheaper?)
Or any suggestions?
