~$1100 budget gaming computer

Thread Starter
So I've decided to build a gaming computer now rather than before when 7xxx wasnt out.

MOBO:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271 Asrock gen3 extreme3

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072 i5 2500k

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231416 G.skill sniper 2x4gb

Monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236059 VH23 LCD

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021 Antec 900

Since HDD's are so expensive nowadays, I was wondering if it was smart just to get a SSD, if so, I will most likely purchase the Crucial M4.
The thing is, everytime I build a PC, I never use over 250gb worth of space. So I'll probably get the 256gb m4 if its a smart idea to skip an HDD.

Also I need a PSU, I can't find a PSU that is under $100 that is a 650w-800w modular. Though I am currently not looking to OC, I may want to somewhere far down the line, once the 2500k is seriously out of date.

Another thing is, my friend told me that if I get a 7970, my 2500k will bottleneck me, which sounds very dumb; but I just want to make sure it doesn't. Should I buy the 7970 is the 7950 the best bang for the buck? Or Should I buy a 6970 (seems like new egg is discontinuing most of the 6970)

My friend is selling me his Antec 900 v2 case for $30, so that will ease the budget.

Cliffs: I need a GPU, HDD or SSD, and PSU.

Thank you.

yes using 7970, the 2500K might bottleneck the gpu by a margin, but you can OC it to level the playing field here's my WEI, the 2500K at stock with gtx 560 ti 448 cores. as you can see the cpu scores lower than the gpu, the 7970 is much better than my gtx 560ti 448,
507

yes crucial M4 are good, you can also look into mushkin lineup the chronos 240GB which also has good read spedd same as crucial m4, but the chronos beats the m4 on writing speed. Since you can afford the 240GB then go for it otherwise 120GB is enough & go for internal hdd storage. the Z68 motherboard, can configure the ssd and hdd with intel rapid storage, as soon as it is detected.

the g skill ram is also good as compared to my mushkin, I think it is better as some of my friends with gskill ram are having better speed ratio bench compared to mine at same capacity & speed.

For the psu I suggest the Mushkin Joule 800W it is being sold at newegg at $100, it has good reviews by Tweaktown, you might consider that. saves me a lot of money.

Crap, would the 2500k still bottle neck a 7950? I cant afford to upgrade both GPU and CPU. How much of a increase in performance is the 6970 and the 7950?

Crap, there was a deal yesterday where all the m4 were $1/gb including the 240gb. It looks like its expired now, so I might have to go with a small SSD and and ~200 - 300 gb HDD.

I forgot to mention about the case, I know why your friend is selling his/her case to you, it is because the antec 900 has no cable management that can hide the cables at the back of the mobo, you might want to consider the coolermaster elite 311 for $40, just add the $10 it is small but has the cable routing at the back of motherboard for better cable management, you can check my rig picture if you like, the elite 311 has the HAF series internal at the budget level.

Well, he's actually a cousin of mine, so thats why he's selling it really cheap. But , damn the antec 900 looks like a very nice case. Before my budget I was looking at the HAF series, particularly the haf 922. But as of right now, I can't afford it.

So you say just because CPU gets a lower score than the GPU on WEI the cpu is bottlenecking them? doh.gif

I never seen a 2500K bottleneck ANY GPU, not even a 7970 or 7970 in Crossfire rolleyes.gif

heck i don't think any gpu can make a 2500K bottleneck at the moment.. Why do you even trust WEI anyway

And what exactly do you (or your friend) propose to "upgrade" the 2500K to? 2600/2700K wont see any better framerates in 99% of games, neither will an X79 with a single card, marginal drop even.

No, a 2500K wont be a problem with any single card.

The only place where it might that I can think of is the tree of CPU death and maybe another specific scenario here or there (I'm sure there is at least one more out there), but like I said, theres nothing better out there at the moment.
And yea, WEI= doh.gif
