GTX 480 MSI Afterburner

Thread Starter
Greetings everyone

I just play starcraft 2 under 44% fan speed ( i forgot to set to auto fan adjust in MSI Afterburner).
I heard form the pc case that fan is trying to spin faster but can't , and i immediately close sc and set to auto,in that moment temperature was 105-110C*.
After stupid mistake, I am playing games normaly and i run 3D Mark Vantage i dont see the artifact.
But the fan control adjust when i set to auto is strange when i play other games example Metro 2033
temp of GPU is 87-90C* but the fan is running at 60% of speed.
What damage i done , can i RMA-it?

thank you in advance

If you realized quickly that something bad was happening, no damage should have been done to the card. Long periods of time at over 100*C aren't exactly good for the card, so realizing quick is good. The operating temperature range for Nvidia cards is [some very low temperature]-105*C

I, personally, have had cases where MSI Afterburner wouldn't ramp up my fans automatically (!) and ended up playing BF3 for about 1/2 an hour at 100*C. There hasn't been any noticeable stability problems with the cards either.

Unless you think the card broke (which it probably didn't) then don't bother RMAing it.

You should be fine. Those temps are ok for short periods of time. I think the thermal spec on the 480 was 105c

Like everyone has been saying, those temperatures are acceptable for short periods of time. The post-event temperatures sound pretty normal to me (especially if you're using the reference cooler) at those fan speeds. I have two 470s, from what I've read and my experience I would say try to keep them 90C or below even under a full load.

thank you for replying all

i think that card is fine, but the main control of the fan gtx 480 is not correctly spin the fan
when i use MSI Kombustor temp reach 100C* but the fan of 480 is spining 60%?
Did i maybe broke controler ,btw i read that some people change their bios of 480 ,because
nvidia change control speed.

Don't use the auto adjust then use the manual adjust for the fan speed so it won't get hot.

Set it at 70% at least.

Go to the settings, the fans tab, check "enable user defined software automatic fan control" and set your own fan profile to have the fan speed adjust to the temperature,

Turn "Xtreme Burn-in" on and see if that helps.
