Installed SSD - now some other drive falls asleep

Thread Starter
My setup was a Hitachi 3K 1TB, WD1001FALS, WD640AAKS. I decided to add an m4 as the SSD, reinstalled windows 7 on it.

I didn't have to change which port any of the drives go to - I just plugged the SSD into one of the open intel 6gbs ports.

But now occasionally during normal activity I can hear a hard drive powering up - the high pitched whine of a drive waking up. I checked the power settings and the hard drive setting is set to never sleep. I have no way of telling which drive is the one making the powering up noise or why.

Any ideas about why this is happening or how to diagnose it?

Happens to me too, dude....Windows just likes to power them up occasionally to write some obscure log/settings/etc.

They should never be powered down though, I want all of my drives spun up at all times.

This was happening to me as well with a scorpio black. Needless to say, I'm finished with internal mechanical drives smile.gif

Edit: I'd just run each drive individually for an hour or so, until you figure out which one is creating the noise. I bet it's one of the WD drives.
