Looking to upgrade!

Thread Starter
Hey guys!
So my pc is around 3 years old I think at the moment. I would like to upgrade some parts and looking to upgrade the graphics card. At the moment I have a Gigabyte HD 4870. My ram is at 6gb and my mobo allows for 8gb max so I might upgrade the ram as well. So my dilemma is to either upgrade the graphics or upgrade my motherboard or cpu. I will upgrade ram either way as it is pretty cheap. Not sure what will give me the biggest improvement in performance. I do a lot of gaming including World of Warcraft and BF3 and a bunch of steam games occasionally. My budget is probably around $250-$300 max just to upgrade a bit. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

if i had 300$ max to spend on upgrades this is what i would do~

1.) if you do not have an aftermarket cpu cooler i would get it and push your current cpu to the max

2.) buy a new graphics card the 4870 is around 5770 level and thats just not going to cut it for 1080p these days (if that is the res you play on)

I would get this card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127565

and this cpu cooler

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608018

These would be the biggest upgrades for you IMO.

6 gb of ram is just fine for gaming right now you dont need to upgrade for a little bit thumb.gif

You're definitely fine with the CPU and Mobo setup you have. The i7 920 is still a very powerful CPU and is only one generation old. You could overclock it to get some extra performance if you haven't already, as the i7 920 is a great overclocker. For upgrades you could get a HD6950 and aftermarket cooler as the previous poster stated. Personally I would wait for the HD7800 series which is supposed to be released this month (March). You could also wait for Nvidia's Kepler but I'm not sure when those are going to be released so it could be a long wait.

I noticed that as well which is strange since AMD doesn't currently have a replacement out for the HD6900 series. Maybe they are just devoting more production resources to the HD7000 series and the HD6000 series is suffering as a result. An HD6950 can still be had at a good price from a different etailer or used.

Thanks for the replies! Totally forgot to mention I have an aftermarket cpu cooler, the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler. Thanks for the advice about overclocking my cpu, anyone have any links of guides? Have never overclocked before. Also, I have a Cooler Master Storm Scout Case, will the new generation graphics cards fit if I were to wait?

Thanks again!
