Laptop Issue

Hey guys,

My boss is having a problem with his Dell XPS laptop. It doesn't seem to effect the performance, however his laptop will not shutdown properly. When clicking start then shut down, it closes programs, shuts down windows, then goes to a black screen, but all the fans are still running, power button is illuminated etc.. Same happens if I try to restart. I have checked the BIOS settings, seems to be alright, tried a battery pull in case something was wonky there.

He did have the motherboard replaced about 3 months ago, water damage. Since they replaced it this has been occurring. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Could simply be a driver issue, could try re-installing drivers for chipset, video, audio, wi-fi, blue tooth, etc.

I have the same problems with my Lenovo T500. Except the only time it does not go to sleep is when I'm on the work network. At home it sleeps, at my girlfriends house it sleeps, then at work, nothing. I've learned to live with it but it is pretty annoying. I wish someone could come up with an answer.

I'd second the possibility of a driver issue. You could also try checking in the laptop's BIOS for the power management settings, to see if anything is peculiar.

You know, there's a switch you can hit on the T500 to disable the wifi. Or maybe the FN+F4 or FN+F5 shows the on-screen display to disable wifi. Not a permanent fix, but hey, it's something.

This might be unrelated but I occasionally have issues re-connecting to VPN after resuming from sleep. Disconnecting before I sleep solves any problems (otherwise, it's just, close the VPN, then re-open it).
