[Geek] Of course Twitter sold your tweets to ad companies

Privacy advocates are up in arms about Twitter. Why? Because shockingly, Twitter decided that they had a pretty darn good way to generate revenue — and they decided to capitalize. Yes, Twitter is selling access to your tweets.

The outrage began when Twitter struck a deal with DataSift, a company that extracts insights from social networking sources like Twitter. It’s a lucrative deal for Twitter, a company that people once thought was setting itself up to fail. Tens of billions of tweets later, they’re sitting on a goldmine. DataSift will reportedly charge customers upwards of $16,000 per month for access to its tools — and Twitter will no doubt receive a healthy sum in return for providing access to their raw data.

I'm not really surprised on this one.

Oh nooz, publicly viewable, tiny, insignificant scribblings of twitter drama-w****s on a free website on the freaking internet are being made available to an ad company... What ever shall we do? *arm flail*

If you want to post crap about yourself all over the Internet expect it to come back and bite you in the rear end. Honestly, sometimes I really wonder what people are thinking...what possible source of revenue could any of these data warehousing companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc., have that is not related to data mining and distribution? If you warehouse data the only logical business model is to mine it and sell it, so keep on Tweeting, and Facebooking, and doing everything else you do but please stop complaining about privacy when you yourself do not have any reservations. Otherwise, just stop using the services or use them with discretion posting only information which you deem to have no importance to you.

Why does it even matter? It's not like Tweets are completely private to begin with.

A bunch of crowdsourcing sites will sift through tweets for potential ads as well.

LOL, as usual, only like 1 person understands the context of privacy when it comes to a public forum.

"ZOMG, privacy-rape, you're selling data that I posted in a public forum?!"

"yes, because public == private"

People are real morons. They'll be your typical sheeple, jump all over a service or product, love it to death, not at all understand the context of what they're doing, and then cry like babies when the info they voluntarily posted publicly is accessed by some entity.

Wait, so everybody knows that I hate taking out garbage at 6am now?

Noooooooo!

People really need to get over themselves, I doubt anybody is going to ever actually read what they say outside of their followers. Though I never understand why people post about them smoking weed in places I'm sure are illegal in and drinking while they're underage. Seems like cops could easily just do a round up using twitter, especially since people don't use any privacy settings, though it would be counter-productive to use privacy settings.
