Warcraft Budget Build

Thread Starter
Hey guys looking for some advise / ideas for a new build for my wife. She has an old AMD 5000+ and is in need of an upgrade so she can do world of warcraft raiding.

Looking at a budget of about $400, need the following :

CPU
PSU
RAM
MB
CASE
OS
GPU

Was looking at maybe a A8-3870K but not sure about that. We were looking at an HD 7750, would that work with the A8?
Already have peripherals, monitor, kb/mouse... I have a 64gb M4 and 500gb HDD Im going to give her as well.

We are both AMD fans, but not opposed to a comparable intel build within budget.

$400 is not gonna cover all that you need, .100$ alone on the os
Here is the best i could come up with scratch that i couldn't come up with anything that remotely comes to 400$
Sorry redface.gif
Your better off going to wallmart and getting her a prebuilt then throwing a graphics card in it <-- thats horrible also but with 400$ best your prolly gonna get.
Heres the closest i could get and thats without a os

If you have a Microcenter nearby, go pick up a CPU/MOBO bundle, they can't be beat on price right now. I would also go looking on eBay for the graphics card of your choice, used, since they will all most likely have a transferrable warranty by serial number.

I would think the most bang for your buck would probably be a cheap Sandy Bridge setup with an H67 board. I'm pretty sure an i3-2100 will smoke anything you can find made by AMD in WoW.

Check out the Anandtech CPU bench.....here's an i3-2100 vs. that processor the above poster put up:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/289?vs=202

Sandy Bridge is pulling 26 more FPS in WoW than the AMD triple core, and it's $99 at Microcenter.

thanks guys. 400 is "about" budget... May be able to go higher. Also am willing to buy used, so intend to keep an eye out over the for sale here on OCN for good deals.

That's why you don't buy the OS from Newegg.

Buy it from here.  This is the same legitimate part number as the package that is sold on Newegg, for less cost.

Hope that helps.

I see an A6 triple core or maybe A6 quad core setup being the most reasonable choice at this budget.

Really, spend more?

You can walk into Microcenter right now and come out with an i3-2100 and a m-atx mobo for the same prices you just listed, and as evidenced by the Anandtech benchmark will romp all over an AMD triple core setup. You also wouldn't be buying into a dead motherboard socket like you are with AMD, Ivy Bridge would drop right in in the future if you wanted to.

Makes no sense to go AMD unless you're dead set on overclocking just to reach Sandy Bridge potential, Sandy Bridge is that good.

There is not a Microcenter near Memphis, TN (His location listed on OCN) anyways.

$115 i3 2100
$50 H61 ASRock Mobo
$20 2x2GB RAM 1333MHz because of H61 chipset
$37 CX430 PSU
$88 OS
~$310 Before rebates

GPUs:
$80 5770
$150 GTX 470 Probably can negotiate
You might be able to find a 6850 or even a GTX 460 for ~$100 just put up a wanted add in the forsale section.

Cases:
$40 NZXT Source 210
$27 Some Cheap case
There are more cases, I was just listing a couple of cheap ones.

The reason for suggesting the i3-2100 over an A8 or PII is solely because WoW LOVES faster CPU's, and the SB architecture is faster. If AMD's architecture was faster I would be recommending them. Also, I would not go for anything less than a 5750 or a GTS 450.

EDIT:
You can look on ebay as well, I think i saw a GTX 460 on there for ~$80 just make sure you message people and ask about Warranties. thumb.gif
