Sub $300 Build for the In-laws

Well folks I'm back and am doing another build log for you!!!

*waits for the cheering to stop*

OK....Let's get started.

My in-laws have been using a system I built 7 years ago. It was my first attempt at a gaming system and it has reached it's final days. During a recent storm their electric flickered for about an hour straight. I think it was more than the surge protector could handle and the computer will no longer boot up. I had to explain to them that any part on that computer has fried it's cheaper for me to build them a new one. I had to do some research for legacy parts for that computer, I gave up because I couldn't find anything in a reasonable price range.

They went and rented a computer from a rental place so my father-in-law could finish up some college coursework. After a bit of math, we discovered that he is over paying severely. He called me this afternoon and asked to price him up a cheap computer that will be able to do his school work.

After playing on Newegg for about 15 minutes I called him up and got him one for cheap.

It is not going to be used for anything other than Microsoft Office 2010, Internet browsing, and flash games.

Here is what I found for him!

225

AMD A4-3300 Llano 2.5GHz Socket FM1 65W Dual-Core Desktop APU (CPU + GPU) with DirectX 11 Graphic AMD Radeon HD 6410D AD3300OJGXBOX

225

GIGABYTE GA-A55M-DS2 FM1 AMD A55 (Hudson D2) Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

I got those together in a bundle and saved $20!

225

Sony Optiarc 24X DVD Burner, Bulk Package 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model AD-7280S-0B - OEM

225

Seagate Barracuda ST320DM000 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

225

Pareema 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model MD313C80809L2

225

Broadway Com Corp 1243MA-BLACK Glossy black Steel ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply

Now I know some of you guys are kicking yourselves at some of my choices for this build. But we have to remember they don't sit at their computer for hours on end. It just needs to boot up and do specific tasks and be reliable until graduation (which is soon)

Now for the real kicker!!!!

I got all this for $272.60 shipped to my door. I hated having to get them a new DVD burner and HDD.... but IDE is something of the past and they need to get with SATA.

I ordered the parts today and they will be here early next week. This will not be as detailed as my Corsair Heaven build, but I will try to take tons of pics and show everything I do to get it up an running.

I have already given them the monitor I purchased with my Corsair Heaven build, and I got myself some new goodies. When I get their parts in I will update that thread as I need to take mine apart for a deep cleaning.

The HDD choice is a serious ripoff.  You can get 500GB for well below the cost of that at NCIX.  $75 shipped.

I wouldn't put my trust in Pareema's RAM either.  They appear to have no specifics concerning warranty.

I am also not a fan of the case/PSU.  The PSU is edging towards mediocre and is a very low quality unit, for one.  Secondly, you should save both the desk space and cash by going with a small form factor; I recommend the Apex DM-387.  It's based directly on the Antec Minuet 300 which was a high qualiy SFF case of its time and comes with a PSU that actually supplies what it's rated for and lasts; Apex PSUs may not be the best but they are often very, very reliable.

EDIT: Oh wow, this is a week old thread, seriously T_T

Sucks to be you then as you're stuck with RAM that has no warranty guarantee and you could have less HDD space than you could have gotten NCIX price has been stuck there for awhile - more than a few weeks.  The adjustment in balance that can be done due to the savings from both the HDD and case could have allowed you to fit an A6 triple core APU into the same build budget.  DVD drive savings too; you severely overpaid for a DVD drive; anything more than $20 for me is a serious ripoff, but a massive $26 shipped and it might as well be returned.  For $16 shipped (with $50+ order) you can get a 24X DVD-RW drive from NCIX.

Should've consulted us beforehand :/

the PC was ordered with the in-laws on the phone, not much time to shop around. The build went smooth and its running very well. I advised against the DVD rom at all, but my father-in-law needs it for classes he takes. I didn't get to take pics of the build as it went way too fast, I did have one little problem about 18 days after they started using it, the BIOS changed from onboard vid to looking for a card, simple solution, but strange that it changed itself.
