8800 GTS 320 PSU question

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm thinking of buying a 8800 GTS 320 for my lan PC.
Since I'm trying to cut costs everywhere, I'd like to use one of my old PSUs that I found from my basement.

The specs on the psu are:
+3.3V 20A | +5V 25A
+12v1 10A | +12v2 14A
-5V 0.5A | -12V 0.8A | +5VSB 2A
It's a Codegen 400W PSU.

The other system parts' power usage will be minimal. For the CPU, for example, I planned to use a E2180.

I've read that nvidia recommended using a PSU with 26A on the 12v rail.

From here, however, you can see that the numbers are completely different
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-radeon-power,2122-6.html

What should I believe?
Do you think the PSU would be enough for the card?

A good quality 500w psu will be more than enough to run your setup.

I don't have any 500W "quality" PSUs lying around.

I might have a 450W one somewhere, but I will have to search for it tomorrow.

The one I found is in the OP and that's what I'm asking about.

I'm definitely not buying a new one, since I'm planning to put the LAN PC together for 60-80€ (used parts).

Just out of interest, why are you buying an 8800GTS? Surely there is a more recent card you could get for around the same price? eh-smiley.gif

I used the calculator and it recommends me a PSU with a power of at least 309W.

Still, should I be concerned about the +12V rails on the PSU or not?

The 12v AMPs are very important, you must make sure that you have a good enough PSU or your hardware will not run properly. If you looking to OC you system, which I'm guessing you will, you will need at least a 400 watt PSU with 25a on the 12v rail. Check out the link I posted earlier on in the thread. The CX430 is only $45, I'd say that it's great value for money. Looking at you location, however, I'm not sure what the hardware availability is like in Estonia, but the CX430 is a great PSU anyway, regardless of where you buy it from. wink.gif
