Thinking on build my first HTPC

Hi guys,

I know that the questions I have might be answered in these posts, but I would like to have specific answers as I don't have access to the same stores/components you all guys do (I live in Argentina where it's almost impossible to get anything imported) so please please bear with me. Althought I have a high level of knowledge when it comes to middle and high end computers, I've never had to build one with 3D, extreme sound quality and fan noise in mind.

I've ordered a Sony MU.TE.KI DDW5500 (6.2 channels) for my 3D led tv and it should arrive in 10 days or so. The only thing I haven't purchased yet is the BD player so I'm struggling between a Sony Blu Ray player (to make it all Sony) and an HTPC so I can store my BDs and watch them from there. The money difference is also quite a lot. In my country, the latest Sony BD player is $450 and building an HTPC is somewhere between the $800 and $1000 so to lower costs, I need to know the following:

- With this Gigabyte motherboard and the Intel i3 2100 CPU (with let's say 4GB of RAM), will it be safe to use the onboard audio (using the S/PDIF Out) and onboard video (HDMI)?

- Will stock coolers do? I don't even remember the last time I didn't throw a stock cooler into the trash right after I opened the box so I don't even know how they do (with stock settings) :S

Thanks a lot guys!

IF you are going to play DISCS go with a Blu-Ray player w/o a doubt. If you will rip to MKV/m2ts go with htpc.

mobo/cpu/onboard audio, you will be good to go. S/pdif and/or HDMI will sound the exact same coming from onboard or a high end sound card.

Cooler, this is personal preference. They are fairly quiet and do a good enough job of cooling, the only reason on a HTPC to go aftermarket is to try and go quieter. You will not be able to hear stock over a movie/music even at a low level.

Hmm based on your needs u can have a HTPC for the one box rules all and yes stock HSF is fine and you are better off not OCing for HTPCs actually IMO wink.gif Many options for the all in one box HTPC

1. W7MCE + Total Media Theater 5 for Blu Ray - superior solution for multi/cable tuners
2. XBMC and set TMT3/TMT5/PowerDVD as external player - superior solution for very addictive addons, cross platform capability (windoze/linux) ZERO messing around with codecs
