Is an SSD worthless with a 3Gb/s MOBO?

I've made my decision to get a Plextor M3S 256GB SSD, even though the Agility III is fast, the marvell controller seems more reliable than the sandforce controller.

I also know that my mobo is only 3Gb/s, so will an SSD be comparable to a regular HDD on a 3Gb/s connection, Or will I still get the advantage of having an SSD over an HDD even though I don't have a 6Gb/s mobo? And how slower will my speeds be compared to the benchmarks that are probably using 6Gb/s?

Any SSD will blow a HDD out of the water in regards to speed and performance.

Once you go from running your OS on a a HDD to running it on a SSD there is no going back...

To answer your question a SSD running on 3Gb/s will out perform a HDD on 3Gb/s.

And I dont know the exact number, but I would assume you would get around half the performance by running a SATA 3 SSD on a SATA 2 port.

totally slower, definitely not worth it, your drive will be extremely slow on sata 3gb/s. rolleyes.gif

you wont notice much difference on sata 3gb/s vs 6gb/s buy the plextor m3 and be blown away buy the speed.

Ssd face a bandwidth cap, However i am using a ssd on my 3Gb/s board and it is a definite improvement over conventional HDD.

Get one, use it as a OS drive, If you upgrade down the road just reuse that ssd and it shouldn't be bottle necked anymore because it is more standard now sata ports are 6gb/s

overall if your ssd is capable of 500mb/per sec read in sequential data when using it on a 6gb/s sata connection, You only going to be able to get around 260 mb/s read in sequential data when using a 3gb/sec port.

SSD are good of Data Access. Access Speeds will never hit 300MB/s. Tranfer Speeds will but who transfers large files in SSD anyways.

One of the things people often forget is while SSDs can push through crazy amounts of data (like 500MB/sec), your CPU still has to do something with that data.

And that's why loadtimes often don't improve. Some games or game engines manage to preload data faster than a CPU can decode it - even from a regular old HDD. And yet there's other ones (like BF3) which show massive 60% drops in loadtimes when thrown on an SSD...

60% is huge, but it's not as high as it should be. Benchmarks say that HDDs average 10-25MB/sec when loading game data, yet those same benchmarks reveal SSDs averaging 10-20x as much. (~200-400MB/sec) A 50-60% drop in loadtimes would be the result of 2-2.5x the speed - since many SSDs provide about 20x the speed, we can conclude that most game loadtimes are CPU limited.

I'm still on an AM2 rig with SATA II connections, and my M4 is a very happy upgrade for me (granted, I only got it because my hard drive died on me frown.gif ). I definitely feel the speed difference compared to my old drive, and it's a very high improvement over my school laptop with an i5 second gen CPU. I can't wait to upgrade my computer to the point that I can feel it even more. I wouldn't worry about it much, you should be happy with it.
