If you know your keyboard and want to make things faster, you should try Launchy.

Are you saying to have installed Windows 8 from a USB 3.0 drive, using a USB 3.0 port? If so what USB 3.0 drive do you have? I notice many have beyond laughable speeds, often slower than USB 2.0! The drives I am looking at would have speeds of at least 80/80 read/write, so in theory should almost reduce installation times by a two thirds, given the installation drive is the only bottleneck I see right now. One of my 3TB drives is USB and that has speeds of 132/132 according to ATTO benchmark, which is nice, but you do get used to this speed, then find yourself shocked when you try to copy 4GB of data to a friend’s drive to find it takes over half an hour with write speeds of under 3MB/s!

I've never installed windows via a usb drive. Honestly I can handle waiting 5 minutes more and it means I don't have to reformat my thumb drive when I want to use it for other stuff.

Yeah I've had some pretty terrible speeds with usb 3 as you say sub usb 2 speeds. I own a Adata S102, in my defense it was cheap, usb 3 was new and I needed a flash at that moment in time. My ATTO results:

I'm probably the wrong person to ask. I honestly would have thought usb 3 would make 9 difference to external drives as I thought the max throughput of hdd's is ~70-80mb/s.

Yea i see your drive is slower than most decent USB 2.0 drives, classic case of you get what you pay for i guess. It is shocking though that drives which have such slow speeds can be fitted with USB 3.0 controllers and called UBS 3.0 devices, obviously people assume it will be fast.

As reguards maximum throughput this is definatly higher than you think, as i say my Seagate Expansion Desktop drive on USB 3.0 gets a max of 132/132 on ATTO and windows often reports a peak of over 200. Also see the image below of an internal Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB on SATA3.

Thanks for your input by the way, no else seems to have a clue yet.

No problem sorry I couldn't be of more help. Thanks for opening my eyes to the truth about hdds. As I said I thought the max throughput for a hdd was in the 80's so I was of the opinion that SATA3 and USB3 would be useless to them.

Let me know which drive you buy and how it performs.

I just installed it two days ago, used it for a day then installed StartIsBack, I'm pretty happy with it so far and not missing windows 7 at all tongue.gif Didn't take long to get used to using the corners for switching between desktop/apps etc, I kept the top left enabled in StartIsBack for quick access to any running apps, if no apps are running it does nothing and the top right for metro/settings etc :l Even though I have the start menu there now, I don't find myself using it very often and might eventually disable it...

I think disabling media center was a bit lame though, I installed my TV card drivers and realised it wasn't even there! Then I see they are offering it for free until January 31st, so I get the free key and unlock it, it didn't even download anything, it was already there, just locked mad.gif

Anyway everything runs fine so far, the metro apps are a bit lacking and there are only around 5 right now that are any use to me out of the 1000s and they are more of just a distraction or time waster than anything else right now..

Excuse the green, I was using black in Windows 7 for so long I felt like something different :l

I just got an email from Microsoft about "meeting new windows" and it's just basically how to use windows 8 but I noticed something.

My app store looks VERY different to theirs.

My store:

The store from the vid:

Now this could just be Microsoft trying to make their store look better than it actually is but I swear if they pull an Apple app store on me I will burn windows and wait for steam to come to Linux. To clarify, In South Africa we don't get American apps, we get some very weird and useless ones which has forced me to jailbreak my iPhone if I want any sort of usefulness out it.

Anyone chance you guys could post some photo's of what your app store looks like and your location in the world?

Blocking out your product ID might be a wise precaution to take. Anyways, added.

P.S. People don't forget type your OCN username in a notepad window if you use PC info or winver. Also block out your product key before you post up a screen.
