Forgot to mention that. They probably tested the upgrade editions on vanilla and almost vanilla installs at MS, so I suggested if you only had a W8 upgrade copy to get a clean install of 7 first.

Did that. Installed Windows 7 and then as soon as I booted up, I put the in the Windows 8 pro upgrade disc and installed 8. Still same issue.

This is a Steam problem, not a Win 8 prob imo given the experiences mentioned above. Each time something doesn't run (I had the problem first with CoD MW3) I right click on the game in the Steam library and select 'Properties'. Next I select 'Local Files' and click 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache'. it decides that certain files are missing or corrupt and informs you that it will reacquire them. After that the game works fine during the rest of the session (ie until the next boot).
Annoying that one has to do that at all and it can be infuriating to have to wait while Steam reacquires files via download, but this is a Steam problem that was present in Windows 7 as well. The timing might have made it appear to some that the problem was caused by a Win 8 install.

Did the integrity check. Said I was missing 77 files. It downloaded and installed them. Same issue.

Have you tried doing a clean install thinking.gif
I've done it with my upgrade Windows 8 disk smile.gif
You just have to make sure you "have had" an OS on the OS drive. Then you just do a custom install and delete the partitions, make partition, and install W8.
(all done within the Windows installer).

I did try installing 8 unto a clean drive, but i told me that my key will not work for a clean install.

What you are saying is to boot up into the installer, as if I am going to do the upgrade, then go to the part where I select which drive to install on and delete the partition that has windows 7 on it? This will allow or Windows 8 to be the only thing installed?
I am basically tricking it into thinking I am doing the upgrade, but really, It is doing a clean install.....

I might try that.........

Install Windows 7, don't even bother with the key, or any drivers!
Once windows 7 is installed, put Windows 8 disk in the dvd drive and shut the rig down.
Then start the PC and boot from the W8 disk and do a fresh install like i said, doing a custom install deleting the Windows 7 partitions smile.gif
Delete, delete, create, install thumb.gif

Windows 8 will detect that there was an older OS on the drive, and it'll work smile.gif

Done. Downloading and installing mobo stuff then, will work on games. Thanks for letting me know how to actually do a fresh 8 install with my upgrade key, even if this does not help.

I will report back asap....

Strange. Aren't you supposed to install without formatting, and then delete the Windows.old folder after activation?

What if someone were to do this exact same thing but install Windows 8 from the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant? Would it work w/out bothering with the keys? I have a legit W7 key but sometimes it doesn't work when I do a fresh install and I have to call MS.

I'm pretty sure my windows 8 upgrade installs just fine onto a blank computer. I thought that it did the upgrade check when it downloaded the install files for me and created the install ISO (which I assume was custom).
