If the upgrade version sees a valid install of a qualifying version of windows already on the system, say on another partition/drive, you can just run setup as normal choosing "custom". If installing into a blank drive with nothing on it you have to do the double install method. Install 8 by booting from media, don't activate, then from within the newly installed 8 run setup from the media. You will input your key, setup will run and reboot a couple of times, when finished you will be activated and ready to go.
This worked for me with no issues for one of my machines. Also on another system having XP on another partition I was able to install just once.
With the double install method you end up with a "windows.old" folder, which I am pretty sure you can delete without any issues.Edited by the grinch - 1/24/13 at 7:14am
