There is really nothing wrong with the server edition as long as you don't mind missing out some luxuries such as the included Metro apps, custom themes, and image previews in Explorer. I believe the image preview thing is possible to reenable via some service but I'd rather just keep the OS as barebones as possible. I like to view the desktop OS as being a road legal sportscar while the server OS is a stripped down racing car.
As far as compatibility goes everything runs fine on my main sig rig. All I needed to do to get gaming is install the display drivers and that was it. It also doesn't hurt to install .Net 3.5 through the server manager. The only weird thing I've noticed is that CS:S likes to slow down when looking at 40+ crowds of players. It never did that on the Server Beta. I haven't played CS:S in a while so it could also be some update they did. Otherwise all of the other games I've played on it have run well.
As a game developer it may serve as a better platform for my typical tasks. There is some people that I noticed that are fond of running the server editions of Windows. When XP came out they ran Server 2003, when Vista/7 came out they ran Server 2008, now Server 2012 is looking stylish enough to be able to use as a daily desktop OS (at least to me). We all know its much more secure then the desktop counterpart, just never was all that appealing to look at until now.

Anybody using Storage Spaces? That's the main reason I know use Windows 8 Release Preview instead of Windows 7. I have a pool, with a mirror backups space and a parity library space. Pretty easy, nifty, and awesome that this feature was baked into Windows 8.

can't get it to work. tried the manual installation and windows 8 slams in the face with the software you are using is not compatible with this version of OS bs. not really surprised tho. this laptop doesn't really support windows 7. the weird thing is when I reinstalled windows 7 I can't install my gpu drivers anymore. I had to do the manual install in win 7 to get it to work. this has never happened before

After I tried the Server Beta I was sold on the server OS. I put 2008 R2 on my ThinkPad T500 (Server 2012 didn't support the drivers) and 2008 on my old Pentium 4 rig. It took a little effort to get both OSs able to run games. I prefer the older server OSs over their desktop variants. They may not look as nice but I like the higher efficiency of them. The higher security part is also a nice plus.

So you're a game programmer then? That's what I want to do professionally. What field of game programming do you do?

I do mostly private server programming. Emulators, anticheat systems, that sort of stuff for popular MMORPG games. Most tend to hate official servers because players with $$$ tend to have the upper hand advantage to them who are play4free. As for making a game itself, I planned on making something small and simple like Minecraft. Something I could get off the ground and make a few million dollars off letting a publisher sell for me. But that's just a pipe dream at the moment. biggrin.gif

Very nice. The most I've done so far are just addons for HL/HL2 and some digging into modding for HL2. I want to attempt something like Minecraft myself but my math level is only up to Trig. I don't think I'd be able to put together a 3D game when I barely understand vectors. I could do something like Terraria though since it's all 2D math. I just wish I knew more people who were interested in this sort of thing so I could learn from them. All of my knowledge so far has been through trial and error on my own or classes at college.

Well i loved CP and loved RP even more but was so disappointed when Max Payne 3 did not work on Win 8. Real pity as i reinstalled Win 7 with a very sad face. Wow Windows 7 now seems so boring and slow

I just started and noticed its is very hard to navigate I suggest putting godmode on your desktop

also some hints here

Windows key – brings up the Metro start screen. You can start typing to search for an app, just like the Win7 start menu.
Win + D – brings up the old Windows desktop.
Win + C – brings up the Charms menu, where you can search, share, and change settings.
Win + I – opens the Settings panel, where you can change settings for the current app, change volume, wireless networks, shut down, or adjust the brightness.
Win + Z – opens the App Bar for the current Metro application.
Win + H – opens the Metro Share panel.
Win + Q – brings up the Metro App Search screen.
