AJR1775, I've purchased and used the same thing that viprk24 mentioned. Start8 is AMAZING! I work as a salesman at Fry's Electronics and I've seen some people come in using the Classic Shell and it made me want to pull my hair out looking at it. Even though my store doesn't promote it and wants me to promote the Classic Shell as we charge $25 to install it, I refuse to because of how horrible it is, especially knowing there are better alternatives.

Start8 by Stardock has a one time fee of $4.99 and it's almost an exact clone of the start menu from Windows 7. Check it out and I'm sure you'll be a fan too. http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ It has a 30 day trial too!

Start 8 is useful but be careful of other Stardock products - some are harmless but some interfered with drivers on my system. I know Start 8 and Fences 2.0 are fine, but others such as Deskscapes and Window Blinds may cause system issues. I advise using the free trial period on every product before you commit to it, and test to see if drivers, system monitoring and similar function normally.

Well, guess it's a good thing that I'm fine with vanilla Windows 8, for the most part that is.

Awesome :-) Just wouldn't want to see someone else have the frustrating experience I did.

Has anyone else had issues with either the optimize function for a HDD or running the defragmenter?

When I click on either one, nothing happens at all. I've tried running defrag through the Start menu as administrator and still nothing.

I would not relay on Windows defragmenter anyway. There's so many other ones that do much better and faster job. "Disk Speedup" I use all the time,it's free, fast and reliable. Win 8 does not fragment HDD much anyway. You might want to check if optimize drives service is enabled. Default is "Manual".

Yeah, I have Auslogics too. I just don't like things not working like that, so just wanted to see if someone else has that issue.

Just tried, if "Optimize Drives" service is disabled, Defragmenter will not work, it should be set on manual.

Ccleaner is another great free optimisation program. I work as a computer technician and use this quite regularly it removes old registry files and temporary Internet files. It's a great program to optimise old pcs and keeps them more responsive. Windows 8 is fantastic from power button to desktop it only takes 10.1 seconds to boot. Versus windows 7 19 seconds. When win 8 first came out I wasn't sure I had made the right choice in installing it, but after a few hours of using it I can never go back to win 7 again. I haven't had any compatibility issues as most components have upgraded firmware to make sure the transition to win 8 runs well perfect.
