7970 good upgrade from 460 SLI?

Thread Starter
Ok so the title pretty much says it all. Would the 7970 be a worthwhile upgrade from my GTX 460 1GB SLI cards? If yes does anybody know how much performance I would gain? Since the cards are so old there are no comparisons between the two that I can find.

You can get a decent feel for the differences looking at these two TechPowerUp reviews:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_460_SLI/
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7970/

Some of the games overlap, which can give you an idea. Fortunately, both these reviews use the exact same base systems (except for the hard drive).

EDIT: I just realized I didn't give you my recommendation. I feel that the 7970 is probably a side-grade at worst, and a slight upgrade at best. Unless you have big plans for CF 7970 in the future, I don't see much of a reason why you need to upgrade.

Again, it depends on your resolution.
If not going above 1920 X 1080P, do you really need more then SLi GF-104's?

Depending on GPU clocks it can be a sidegrade for 1080p.

A pair of 460's close to 900mhz would match a 7970 at stock.

Well the big reason I was considering it is because I play BF3 a lot and that thing is a VMemory whore. I am starting to see a trend of games starting to use more than 1GB. So the issue I am running to is I have more than enough GPU power, but I keep hitting up against that big ugly VRAM wall. Also it would be nice to have a PCIe slot back for add on cards.
