Exactly.
I wanted to quote this part of the interview, too.
Not that the part detailing how well they followed the laws isn't worth a mention...
Quote:
JC: Of course, that is a romantic notion though, isn’t it, that just because we tick the box accepting the terms of service that we’re going to behave ourselves when we’re in there, right? That, I mean, you must have known that people were doing whatever they wanted once they’d gone through the front door. They were exchanging any kind of files that they wanted to exchange. What opportunity did you have to police that?
KD: Well, of course everybody knows that the internet is being used for legitimate and illegitimate uses. I think every online service provider has the same challenges that we have. YouTube, Google, everybody is in the same boat. So what you need to understand here is that we provided the content owners with an opportunity to remove links that were infringing on their rights. So, not only did they have an online form where they could take down infringing links, they had direct delete access to our servers so they could access our system and remove any link that they would find anywhere on the internet without us being involved. They had full access and we’re talking about 180 partners, including every major movie studio, including Microsoft and all big content producers and they have used that system heavily and you need to understand that that system was not even something that was even required by the law. We provided that voluntarily and they have removed over 15 million links.
JC: So every member of the Motion Picture Association, every film studio who is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America had direct delete access to Megaupload.com to take out copyright-infringing material – is that the case?
KD: Absolutely.

I hate seeing this.
Party A follows all the rules of Party B.
Party A also gives Party B the very best means for preventing problems further for Party B, assuming a regulation not required by the rules of Party B.
When Party B finds their rules themselves were so very far from enough,
they actually have the nerve to turn around and blame Party A.

I'd rule in favor of the party that gave 110%.
Not the party that actually failed, and just points fingers when things go wrong.

From a different POV he is kinda like a ship captain that ferries cargo from one port to another without checking whats in it. Could be Teddy bears or stolen camera's, he doesn't care as long as he gets a quick buck off it.

I don't know how i feel about his career but he has a family and i hope things work out for them.

Its not the movie/music industrys job to police other peoples website once again driving cost up. And yes you should be responsible for what is on your site. Does ocn not delete post of with picts of porn and other stuff against its TOS. Its called admining your site. And its not about a control of information its about a product that a business produces being stolen from them. If there was no illegal movies or music on the site it would still be up and running today. The problem is people dont consider it stealing because its so easy to get. Throw a couple in jail for a couple of years and make them pay the companys back and it will slow down a lot. If you went and hooked a cablewire from your neighbors house to yours is that not stealing? Same thing.

I'm surprised at how intelligent Kim Dotcom is, and how well he carries himself. I can't believe that he can provide such profoundly rational comments instantly in response in an interview.

Looks like the "MU was taken down because of their MegaBox plan" conspiracy theory was in fact 100% true.

So surprising. rolleyes.gif

Megabox would give artists a better deal than signing with current RIAA deals. Kim Dotcom had a lot of prominent pop artists signing to Megabox.

I guess I should have quoted a bit more for the TL;DR.
Quote:
JC: And you know what’s in those file transfers? You’re able to look at those 800 file transfers a second and say…
KD: Well there are other laws that protect users and those are privacy laws. For example in the US it’s the Electronic Communication Privacy Act which prohibits us from looking into the accounts of users proactively and look for things. It’s like mail, it’s private, we cannot just go in there and police what these users are uploading. But that’s why we have our own terms of service in which we tell our users, “You cannot upload anything that is infringing on anybody’s rights, you can only upload things that belong to you and before any user uploads any file to Megaupload they have to click on a little box that says “I accept the terms of service”. So we have a legally binding agreement with these users that they are not supposed to upload anything that doesn’t belong to them.

As you can see, this is not the case.
The law forbid Kim from such activity.

Funny how freedom works, huh?
There are just some things others have no right to know.
It is unfortunate, but criminals can utilize this.

They need to stop fighting this the wrong way.
They are literally attacking the freedom,
that some abuse,
but it is the right and responsibility of each individual..

I think Youtube takes stuff down based on copyright claim only, and doesn't investigate every single bit of content posted on the site to make sure it doesn't have any copyrighted material. Do you think sites like Youtube should be shut down?

So why are sites like youtube not punished?

I see the exact same thing going on youtube. Copyrighted material is removed sure, but there's also tons of the same copyrighted material that is removed that stay on youtube because it's not receiving the same amount of hits.
