x4 slot using x16 riser cable, how do I use a video card?

Title says it all really.. I have a GTS 450 that I'm trying to get working with this motherboard (http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron2000/MCP55/H8DMR-82.cfm). It has two x8 slots (x4 teeth) and I bought a riser cable, I have everything hooked up but video will not display out of the 450, it only comes through the onboard video card. How do I get it to go through the 450?

Hmm as far as I see, the mobo has a regular PCI-E port. Why not use that?..
Or did I miss something?

No, if you're talking about that black slot up by CPU2 that's a PCI slot.

do you have the external power plugged into the video card from the power supply?

I would like to have a video card to fold on, as well as the two processors. You can take your condescending tone elsewhere.

well as i said im sorry as if you know me im not usally like that.. frown.gif i have been trying to find a solution for you but everywhere i head leads me to riser cards that are suited for 1U server cases. but maybe you can work on that.
for parts list
http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/system/1U/1021/AS-1021M-82.cfm

riser card
http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/Supermicro-CSE-RR1U-ELi_468_16186.html

one would expect that a riser card made for the board will work..

also see if theres a setting in the BIOS as well

I emailed Supermicro, who said that even with the riser card it wouldn't work. It does allow for a discrete graphics card but only through the PCI slot. I'm still skeptical though, this is the email that I received:
Quote:
No, most PCI-E cards are PCI-E x 16 which you can't plug in with riser card.

You can use those PCI cards tested

Thanks.

FP

So I wonder if it's a physical limitation of the slot itself or if the motherboard doesn't support PCI-E video cards... I might have to order the riser card and see for myself.

What's are finished?

I recently bought a similar, but the 4-socket motherboard http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron8000/MCP55/H8QME-2.cfm
and only when I took it up, looked that the videocard is not physically fit in the slot or PCI-E 8x, or in the neighboring PCI-E 16x. Because they are close to each other. Vendor deliberately blocked the ability to insert graphics card (only the network or disk controller).

At now I'm in mild surprise. I want working discrete graphic card!
