Microsoft, always late to the party, reigns in the end.

I'm willing to bet that within 3 years MS will be the prominent player in both tablet and smartphone markets.

People will walk into best buy and if they happen to try the cheaper W8 tablet that doesn't have the specs to run it well, they will walk over to the ipads. Go take a look at the android tablets at best buy now, like 1/2 of the cheap ones don't work or can't handle the OS. Not a great first impression. Microsoft probably would have been better off manufacturing their own units and coming it with like 3 specs fine tuned to sell a product.

There are official minimum specs for Windows 8 tablets, there's a thread floating around here somewhere http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-57360734-64/microsoft-lays-out-window-8-tablet-hardware-requirements/. 1366x768 minimum resolution, all have to be 16:9. That should cut down a bit on fragmentation. Oh and it has to have USB, at least 10GB free space, 720p webcam etc.

this is why tablets are pointless."tablet" smartphones are nice but ultrabooks destroy tablets ( or pretty much any light laptop)

Really? Eh? I've never used it. I'm still not one to support Windows on a slate though, I reckon you'd be able to use Keynote much easier than Office.

Lol why's that? I was... I thought somehow they might make it work, but it's not looking great so far.

Not sure if I like how easily you can get to the standard Windows desktop but having that functionality is pretty awesome. I think it is pretty short sighted to think that this wont be any competition to iOS. Having the Windows name attached to this is enough to bring competition. However, Microsoft needs to take a few pages from Apple on how to properly market their products or as you stated, this will be no competition to iOS.
The functionality is great, but Windows (or OS X) just isn't suitable for a slate. There's several reasons, but mostly it's because of the applications, they're designed to be used with a keyboard and mouse, and for that, they're great, but it's not great for touch, and worse, on a small screen, too.

They need to take WinMo 7.5 and create a version of it on a slate, just like Apple did with iOS. That way, all the apps are designed for use on a 10 inch touch screen, and it's intuitive and easy to use. I think it'd be pretty cool.

Definitively wasn't the best comparison but it was still nice to see how each tablet handled the same functions.
It's better than nothing I guess, but I am disappoint -- I wanted benchmarks lol tongue.gif

I'm not a total fan of touch screen Office, but it gives you the full view, so what you see in Excel, PowerPoint, or Word on the PC, that's exactly what you see on the iPad via MyCloud (crappy ribbon interface and all).

And now we have a 3rd entry, the windows tablet. I am surprised how clean it is, and what features it has over the ipad. The simultaneous applications side by side is one of the biggest innovations that I am surprised Apple never incorporated in their iPad.

The ipad is a toy, nothing more.

I would get one for my kid. For work I would go with android or windows.

I do not need a big ipod touch.
