SUMMARY: The Net giant tries to patent a technique for using a flat, flexible housing to lower the cost of bringing a superfast Internet to homes. Just how big will Google Fiber be?

Apparently Google has put some thought into this idea of bringing super-fast fiber-optic broadband to Kansas City.

The company has applied for a patent for "general edging systems and methods," which the application bills as "a low-impact, convenient, time-efficient and cost-saving optical fiber deployment technology."

My dad has fiber to the home. His cable looks like a plain black hose or thick electrical cable that's dropped from the pole, ran underground, and back up to a small grey box that's got essentially a ethernet switch in it with 5 or so ethernet ports and one running inside the house.

I'm more interested in why the house in the illustration exists in a different dimension than the land it's on.

lol

Fiber would be amazing if it could be rolled out en masse. I think it would pretty well kill the competition though, or at least make them get in check with their pricing/support..

This, as Google being the ISP they have full control, and if the government wants them to do something...

I'm jealous =/ I have no complaints about my Comcast, but if Google's fiber is competitively priced they're winning my wallet.

Implying that the government and CURRENT ISPs aren't already doing that...

Most of the time it runs perfectly but it seems like once a year for 2 weeks it is unstable and I have trouble staying online
