Thoughts on this AMD build

Thread Starter
Hello, I am brand new to the overclocking game and am looking to build a cheap work station. I don't need a lot of graphics power, but I am sick of my super slow old setup. So this is sort of an upgrade of sorts. I am looking mainly for a new MB/CPU with of course more RAM and for now just keeping my pretty crappy graphics card and hard drive. Also I have a power supply that I would like to use.

So, I am looking to build a new AMD setup and thought, why not overclock!

Here's what I am looking at so far

AMD Phenom II X4 960T Zosma processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103995

ASUS M5A97 motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131767

AMD Entertainment Edition 4GB ram x2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820103002

Antec Three Hundred Illusion Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066

ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO GPU (already own) http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/ati-radeon-hd-2000/hd-2600/Pages/ati-radeon-hd-2600-overview.aspx

Thermaltake TR2 420W PSU (already own) http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?C=1247&ID=1537

Seagate barracuda 7200.12 HD (already own) http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=c501895c8ccce110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD

Please let me know what you guys think! Any suggestions are welcome, my budget is around $350.

Good choices for an AMD build. DItch the TR2 and spend money on something a bit better that can handle an overclock and is more reputable. The CPU and mobo are good for their price range for sure. Are you set on the case as I think you might like one with a black interior more.

Case: $50

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146077

PSU: $41 after code and MIR

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027&Tpk=cx500

Cheaper more build friends case and a PSU with a better rep at a good price.

you are spending around 315$ i gues i would suggest you

Phenom II X6 960T 115$

GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3 105$
SAMSUNG 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 24$
i would go for Rosewill Green Series 530W 50$ over corsair CX500 because Rosewill 530 has 498watts on the +12v were as CX500 has mere 408watts on the +12V making it virtually a 450watts redface.gif pls have a look for yourself
329
411
Rosewill green and hive series has pretty decent build
lastly comes the case that case you have in mind is not worth 70$ according to me go with
Coolermaster Haf 912 50$
Hope that helped thumb.gif

Lastly welcome the OCN cheers.gif

The RG530 is better than a Corsair CX600...

Hey guys, Thanks for the suggestions! I will for sure pick up the power supply, don't want any weak links here. I think i'll get the coolermaster case as well and the Samsung RAM. Tarun, what makes the gigabyte mobo a better choice? Also, I will most likely be picking a new GPU soon, I'll only be using it for things like watching movies and just basic things though, would you suggest the Radeon 6570? any other suggestions about that?

Dont see a reason to upgrade PSU. You are not running a high end GPU.

TR2 series psu is not something to be trusted. I wouldn't run it and can't suggest someone else to either.

its a 8+2 Phases VRM setup where as the ASus has a 4+2 Phases setup buddy the 8+2 Phases VRM setup gives you the best overclocking and performance results thumb.gif have a look HERE for more details and as for GPU i would say pick up a Cheap refurnished 5670 or
Gigabyte 6770 1GB GDDR5 Before MIR 1oo$ After MIR 7o$
Hope that Answered you question buddy thumb.gif
