Not to mention, no, a console will not need 8GB right now. It entirely depends, Cell was being worked on for other reasons so it was put in the PS3 with some minor alterations, and proceeded to sell at least 62 million CPUs. (PS3 sales) The 360 just uses a stock standard PowerPC core, albeit the stripped one that's also in the Cell.
The original Xbox also actually used a Pentium III Coppermine with some additional instructions, modern consoles tend to lean to mostly off the shelf parts..The PS4 (Assuming the APU rumours are true) will be heavily based off Trinity or Llano (Most likely Trinity due to timing) but with a few variables tweaked. For example, fewer modules but more shaders.

But I could imagine already these "minor alterations" would drive up cost per CPU significantly, for the mere reason that they deviate from the mass-produced design.
Basically, the point I'm trying to make is that using a run-of-the-mill x86 CPU would probably be cheaper.

Any chip going into any major console is by definition mass produced.

Sony and Microsoft have each sold well over 60 million PS3s and XBox 360s. And this is over three or four chip revisions, so any CPU that goes into them is averaging almost 20 million units.

This is in excess of what many of the shelf x86 chip revisions sell. There are more Cell BEs out there than Phenom IIs.

Yup, parts of Cell ended up in the xbox360 CPU (mostly, the specially designed controller core), some Toshiba media transcoder cards, and most famously, the PS3. Other things, too, but I don't remember those tongue.gif

I wasn't even counting the non-PS3 uses.

AMD (for example) has only made about 600 million x86 CPUs in ~42 years. There are already ~62 million Cell BEs inside Playstation 3s alone.

It would drive the cost up, but not significantly. Think like how Intel makes deviated chips for Apple, or nVidia with OEM series cards. (Eg. GeForce 100, 300)

The R&D costs are lower than an entirely new chip and performance/suitability is better than a normal desktop chip.

Hum, i think the PS4 should be powered by something revolutionary (aka Cell, (sarcasm) ). Hmmmm maybe they should throw an 128-qubit D-Wave processor in there! Haha might even be easier to code for than the Cell was! /rolleyes
