Sapphire 7970 BSOD

Thread Starter
I have two Sapphire 7970's and things were fine in the beginning. But then the problems started happening. Every now and then, when I'm just doing random stuff (nothing intensive), I would get a BSOD. The error was different in the beginning than now. Then I tried booting my computer a week or two ago and I would just get an instant BSOD. I reinstalled and have been getting an atikmpag.sys error ending in 116. It just happens every now and then.... usually at least one or two times a day. I have no idea why. I tried taking one card out, same problem. Then switched them... still got it. I upgraded Catalyst to 12.3 pre-release a little while ago and yet it still happens. I have no idea what the reason for this is. Is it the drivers? The actual card? Something else...?

I also attached the dump file from the most recent BSOD if that helps.

Thanks.

Literally just had this identical problem which I fixed yesterday (same graphics cards and drivers too).

Uninstall all AMD drivers.

Uninstall .Net Framework (all versions installed on PC).

Run a registry cleaner (CCleaner is good for this -- you may have to clean the registry multiple times to be sure that you get everything).

Reboot into safe mode, and run Driver Sweeper to remove the remaining bits and pieces of the AMD drivers.

Reboot into normal mode, and install .Net framework from 1-4 (all of them, in order -- they are not compounded).
*Note: Windows 7 has .Net 3.5 built into the system, so if you are running Windows 7, you can skip .Net 3.5 entirely -- it cannot be removed either).

Reboot again, and this time install the AMD drivers.
Reboot.

Hopefully this should have fixed your BSOD issues.

I had done that before, but I decided to do it again a few hours ago. Did it.. everything was fine... and then it just happened again. Any more suggestions?

EDIT: Have BSOD'd multiple times so far after doing this in a really short amount of time.

I've done everything I can think of and it still keeps on happening. At this point, I have no idea what to do anymore... and I'm pretty desperate.

Not running the 7970 but 5770 in CF.

Never had a problem until I went from the 11 series drivers to the 12 series.
Started to experience the same problem when I did.
First thought it was one of my cards going out and researched it pretty good.
Found out that alot were having that problem.

For me it started with the Drivers dropping out and stating that fact, And every so often would BSOD or drop me
back to the desktop.
Though possible unstable clock on GPU or CPU but didn't work either.

I went back to pre 12 drivers and the problem has gone away. Now running the 11.8 driver again.
And I always do a clean uninstall of drivers.
Including (ALL) Registry folders-sub folders and keys before new drivers.

Just a thought, But not happening with alot of people.

Later:D

If your monitoring with AB then make sure you disable ULPS. It always gives me issues with both running and not disabling the ULPS feature.

I had an error very similar. I had just got the card installed and was just doing some benching and got a bsod 116 in the middle of running Heaven. Things from there were awful. I couldnt use my computer. I was always getting "Display driver AMD has stopped working but recovered" over and over and over. Only every so often I would get another bsod. I tried everything....clean installed windows...drivers from 11.12 all the way through 12.3 previews. Same issue. Then I tried the card on a friends computer and had the same issues so now im in the middle of RMA and will find out if it was for sure the card once the new one gets here.

Disable CF!

Drivers are still too new, so until 12.2 final comes out, just run a single GPU in the mean time (that is what I am doing).

Do it in this order:

  1. Uninstall Afterburner and Catalyst.
  2. Clean it with Atiman Uninstaller v.6.3.1 (turn off UAC to install this).
  3. Install 1/25/2012 http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/RC11Driver.aspx
  4. Install MSI Afterburner 2.2.0 Beta 14 Download
  5. Enable "unoffcial overclocking" HOW TO: Enable UNOFFICIAL overclocking mode in MSI AfterBurner
  6. Afterburner settings > enable all voltage controls.

Note: Exit Afterburner prior to editing .cfg file and ULPS.

Crossfire User; from step #4 > #7 > #5 > #6

7. Disable ULPS:

  • Go to regedit (start > search programs and files > "regedit").
  • In drop down menu: find file > type "enableulps".
  • For ALL instances (keep pressing F3) change the "1" value to a "0".
  • Reboot PC.
