5x1 Portrait mode on 7970?

How do i do this? i have 3 monitors hooked up and in eyefinity on a 5870 1GB. i purchased 2 more monitors a few weeks ago, and am looking to upgrade to a 7970. but with 4 ports on the cards, how do i get the 5th one on there? a splitter of some sort?

i did see the ASUS DirectCU II card, with i think was 6 ports (4x mini-dp, and HDMI, and a DVI port), but that card won't fit inside my current case, so i am needing to purchase the dual slot version of the card. any ideas on how to implement? would i only need one 7970, because right now i have 2GB of GPU RAM (2x 5870s), and the 7970 has 3GB on a single GPU, so i think one card can handle games at 5x1 portrait.

my monitor stand can do 3x1 landscape + 1 above, but i really like portrait mode so i can sort through my collection of pics and music without scrolling much.

thank you for the input and assistance. i am trying to get everything setup before i install windows 8 when it releases.

You only have 1GB of ram. The same textures are loaded to both cards.

As for your question, I've been wondering about this too. Hopefully someone else comes along. I do know that some manufacturers are rumored to be releasing a 6GB Eyefinity version with 6 outputs.

you'd need a Multi Stream Transport (MST) hub.
which does not exist (for consumers) at this time.

What is the restriction on using the ASUS 7970 in your case?
Looking at your sig rig your 5870s are the stock models, they are almost 11" long. So going to a single Asus 7970 would actually be 1 slot less with the same 11" length.

Or is there something I'm missing.

I have the 7970DCUII card and its great. I'd be happy to do any measurements when I get home.

With your current HD5870 CF driving 3x1920x1080, the VRAM amount must have been forcing you to lower certain game settings already because 1GB per GPU for this resolution is just barely enough for many games.  2GB per GPU is more comfortable.  If you want to do 5x1080x1920, then 3GB per GPU is certainly more suitable.

Unfortunately, as pointed out above, reference HD7970 3GB has to use MST hub to do five monitor setup. Perhaps non reference Asus HD7970 DirectCU II with six outputs can do without (as an 'Eyefinity 6' edition?)

So, at the current moment, your best option is one (or two) HD6990 which can drive 5x1080x1920 natively. IIRC, it has, out of the box, the adapters to do 3 monitors.  You will need to buy more adapters to do 5 monitors.

Example:-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yvakLCwbz4&feature=related

Note that HD6990 has 4GB for two GPUs (ie 2GB per GPU). This amount of VRAM is more suitable to drive 3 monitors. So, you might have to lower some game settings for certain games when you do 5 monitors.

thanks for the info!

card size is limiting some, because i recently swapped cases to start planning for another backup build. the current case at the moment is an FT03. while the DirectCU GPU would fit, using a 2 slot card would be better for cable management, as well as allow me to use one more fan to direct air outside the case.

700

as for gaming, MW1-2-3 were maxed out on my 3 screens, and so was both L4d's. crysis 2 was good as well, but yes with crysis 2, i did have to leave some stuff at low or medium, but otherwise a good playable experience. i think after awhile, i was so awe-struck with the graphics, i forgotten i had turned a few things off or down some to play.

700

so i think, if my comprehension serves me well,

1) 6990 + required extra adapters
2) the DirectCU II, which after a google search, is 100$ Less than the 6990

adapters should not be a problem, i am just over-thinking, because it would still be nice to just xfire and use the second card to tack on the extra monitors, instead. too many cables into one card is visually scary.
