Need a storage solution- 4TB are now full.

Thread Starter
Okay I got a computer for my TV in the living room (I hesitate to call it a HTPC) and my sig rig. Both have a 2TB green drive for data, both have the same data just in case one drive fails. Both are now full, and with the current prices of HDDs, I'm in trouble! doh.gif

About 1TB or more are movie files. I wouldn't mind moving them all to the HTPC and freeing up space on my sig rig's drive, but I need them backed up. Burning them is not an option, even though I would love to make a master set. Just WAY too long to process, way too many discs, and too costly in DVDs. So that's out.

I'm probably not going to be able to convince the wife to let me buy yet ANOTHER 2TB drive, and even if I were, I would need to buy two to backup the data on the new one as it fills.

I've looked into online storage. It's priced to justify just buying another drive...yearly subscriptions are a bummer when you don't end up with hardware of your own.

I guess I'm looking for a large tape drive. Is this my best solution? If there is another option I'm not thinking about, I would love some input. Maybe some help in finding the right tape drive (if that is the best option) would be greatly appreciated also, since I know very little about them.

Thanks in advance!

well....if the movies/shows on the drives are not really important, do you really need the data on both mirrored?

but yea, another 2tb or 3 tb drive(s) is what you need

I was too shocked, I just assumed since it was such a specific (and it seemed unsophisticated) technology that they would be much cheaper than regular HDDs. Man was I incredibly wrong..

Well, that's a good point, and I have gone through a few times and cleaned up a few games, programs, and movies that aren't really practical already, before they filled. But I'd really like to keep them, and backed up...without saying too much against the forum's TOS, recent news I've been following lately is making me fear my sources for movies are on the decline and in danger of being gone. Trying to stockpile all I can before that happens.

That's a good idea. Someone said on here on another thread that the supply is already back up, but they are keeping the prices high to "further research" so I'm not sure how long that'll be. Maybe I'll try to scrounge some goodwill computers.

Besides scrounging you can also wait for one of the sale events. Last month NCIX had great prices for Hitachi 2TB drives. I doubt non-sale prices of mechanical drives are coming down to acceptable levels within this year.

i hope so, on the TV news two nights ago experts are predicting the flooding to return to Thailand again this year and i think its quite possible due to the monsoon season starting around IB release date and still high water tables.. it all depends how the flood measures hold up for the industrial areas.. which they are sad as they are designed to steer the water into domestic areas... i guess here money comes first is definately a way of life
