Tragedy/Lightning Struck

Thread Starter
As the title suggests my computer has been fried by lightning. It is my workhorse through which I make my meager living. The parts I was using I have in my sig. My beautiful Bloodiron I believe may be compromised, my memory is almost certainly shot, I dont know about my processor and I hope my data is intact.

I would simply replace parts but the standards are too far out of date to justify spending the money on replacements, as pretty much any motherboard would be a downgrade and I feel kindof silly spending money on old parts.

So Im giving any of you AMD guys the opportunity to tell me why I might want to go with an AMD build. I am going to try keeping everything except for the Motherboard processor and memory. Any tips on stable combinations of parts?

Any input will be appreciated as I dont have much money these days. I need to spend what I have wisely.

Thanks
Integra

AMD - Price/performance is VERY high. Microcenter has a deal where you can get an 8120 with a GA-970A-UD3 for 200. So you can build a new system for about 500, maybe even less.

Holy Crap 8 cores! I guess I've been living under a rock or something. Is software even coded to run smoothly on that many cores? Thats probably a whole can of worms but I like the idea of 8 cores + 32nm arch if it works well. Anyone have any input on this? Very nice deals, and how does the 8120 stack vs this Phenom http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727

Alright, hatching a plan, I believe I might have a friend in Boston who can pick this up for me if I cant get them to ship the combo. After much reading Im partial to going with the FX8120 + GA-990FXA-UD3. Im looking at the G.Skill Sniper 1866 dual channel kit with free shipping from Newegg. Can anyone think of any compatibility issues here? Are these good choices?

My once powerful 8800GT will look silly associated with these parts tongue.gif

Now, my memory is foggy on this, will I be able to run on the old operating system or do I need to reformat? I will boot from a Linux CD if I need to reformat and save all my info so its no sweat either way.

Thanks all, + rep

A reformat is needed, especially since you are switching the motherboard as well as the CPU (I tried it when I was doing a similar switch), and it will allow you to install the correct drivers right away, instead of having to uninstall the drivers from the old system and install the correct ones. thumb.gif

The only issue with AMD is that clock for clock, it is.....much slower than intel. About 70% in some cases. But I think it should be good for you are doing. AutoCAD is single threaded and doesn't really require a lot from the CPU nor the memory (though have 8GB shouldn't be an issue). Mostly it is GPU heavy and nvidia seems to do the best in those areas.
