Graphics Card Temps Seem Unreasonable

Thread Starter
Hello there,

I'm in the process of re-overclocking my Asus Dark Knight 4870 512MB GPU because I recently had to wipe my computer. I hadn't really pushed it far last time because of laziness, but this time I'm going further.

The thing is, I'm getting ridiculous results that seem too good to be true. I'm concerned that maybe my temp sensor is reading low. I'm currently sitting at 1070 MHz (stock is 750 MHz) on the core clock with max temps at 70 degrees. No signs of instability yet, but I'm a little bit worried because of how much of a boost that is, without a huge increase in my load temps (around 10 degrees).

I haven't changed the heatsink/fan or reapplied thermal compound or anything since I bought the card back in 2009. I know it has an upgraded cooling system on it from the manufacturer, but it still seems outrageous. I've been testing it using GPU Tool and MSI Kombuster as I've been overclocking it, and haven't had any artifacting or other errors yet. Also, my temps seem to react as you would expect them to under load. What do you think?

Thanks in advance,
Ethan

How much have you changed vcore? Temp may not be much higher if your vcore is the same or if you only pushed it a little higher.

What are your idle temps like relative to ambient temperature? Your temp sensor could be fine.

whats the fan speed also if the fan speed is 60+% then that isn't to bad smile.gif

Fan speed went up to 69%, and I haven't changed my VCore yet since I haven't run into any sort of instability, and my ambient temps are around 45-48 deg C. Just got a little bit worried when I looked on the 48xx owners club and saw that most of them were topping out before 900MHz, and this thing is almost 200MHz higher with no signs of stopping. but hell, maybe I just got a perfectly made GPU and didn't know until now.

fan speed looks good, have you tried to play any GPU intesive games? i know with my 460 i would get no errors with the tools yet when i go ingame i get a error or two then i step down the OC or add more voltage and it goes away redface.gif

carefully try to feel the heatsink with your finger to unsure the sensor is ok.

I haven't just yet haha, woops. I'll pull up BF3 for a few minutes and see if anything weird starts happening, I'll edit this in a few to let you know.
Edit: Very stable in BF3, feels like a completely different computer, guess I'll go ahead and keep going then! Also, felt the heatsink with my hand and the temperature on it seems reasonable compared to the readings I'm getting. Just got a great chip I guess, and sadly haven't been taking advantage of it!

The difference in temps isn't unreasonable at all smile.gif. You have a higher fanspeed lol, and 10 degress is a decent chunk, but it's quite good. Take it easy on the card though tongue.gif. How's it handling BF:3?

You're super worried about ruining a $30 video card that may or may not have a faulty sensor?? Really?
