This is some pretty nice news. It's like a pre-built pc with the Valve logo on it and calling it a gaming system also. That's a hard hitter.
Basically saying that "Were going to release a gaming console with PC capabilities. ie; console games. PC games, Internet browsing, freedom of software installation and of course viruses" lachen.gif

Valve has quashed rumors that it is developing a console-like "Steam Box" hardware standard for its Steam service. Valve's Doug Lombardi told Kotaku that the company is "building boxes" to test its "Big Picture" initiative, which will make Steam play nice with PC setups that use a television set as a display. Lombardi also noted that Valve is experimenting with things like biometric feedback, which was another aspect of the console rumor, but that such experimentation is "a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware."

That said, Lombardi did not dismiss the possibility of Valve-developed hardware in the future.

This is Alienware all over again.

4GB sticks are less that $20 right now, 8GB is not overkill, its just right, 4GB would be the absolute bare minimum which only the cleanest of PCs could get away with

I read awhile ago that Valve was considering making the box upgradeable, albeit a standardized upgrade. Will only consider buying it if that's the case. Reason I don't buy consoles is that you can't upgrade them....so if the steambox isn't at least somewhat upgradeable, than there's no point I'll just stick with building up a PC. But it would be nice to have some standardization so people like, say Crytek, can optimize their software so that you don't need $10k rigs to run it. The Crysis 3 video's have me absolutely shell shocked, I've never seen anything like it.....if the Steambox won't run Crysis 3 at it's fullest than it's a moot issue for me cause I, at least eventually, want to play that game with everything running on absolute max. I've got movement just thinking about it.

I think a lot of people are missing the point of this product.

Console games out sell PC gaming, thats just how the market works right now.. This is just a way to deliver pc games in an environment most console gamers are familiar and comfortable with.. The OS will likely be a customized distro of linux, and the gaming console's UI will mimic that of big picture. I also seriously doubt they release it with an i7, thats just stupid. It will more than likely star an i5 or i3 smile.gif It will likely be a maintenance free rig that will just plug in and go, but they will leave some things open so power users can play with them if they like. This rig won't be meant to be used as a PC, although you could probably get away with it.

They have also been working on biometric input for quite some time now... At least a year. So i wouldn't expect the controller pictured in this thread to make it to the final product. Valve also has a problem with scope creep on all their projects.. They start off with an idea and it evolves and improves along the way. If they get to a point where they are not happy, they have no problem scrapping everything and starting completely over. With that said, I would take any rumor with a grain of salt...

The target market of this product is not going to be PC gamers. It is going to be console gamers who have always wanted to try PC gaming, in fact I bet they try to sell these in game stop (they already have a relationship with them.) Expect hardware that is on par with the biggest bang for the buck while trying to stay price competitive with a PS/XBOX.

Pretty much. This seems like its targeted at pulling people who for what ever reason don't game on PC. Most of the time it's the cost, and fact that its not "Simple plug n play". This would be a cost effective solution that work's very similar to a regular console platform.

I know a lot of gamer's that won't use the PC because its to complicated and time consuming for them. I see people using this and then wanting to move up to an actual PC.
