Failed to play test tone

Thread Starter
My sound randomly goes out and theres no sound for anything, no windows sounds and when i do test speakers, windows says failed to play test tone. Changing the format studio quality to dvd quality and vice versa only sometimes fixes this. Otherwise I have to restart to fix it. I'm running windows 7 64 bit, Onboard audio on Asus p7p55 lx (via HD audio) latest driver.

Also something called audiodg.exe uses alot of cpu usage at random times. Is this normal? I never had audiodg.exe before when I had my xfi card installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you disabled pointless windows sound enhancements?? go into your Playback device and then go enhancements like virtual surround and such, disable them! Have you changed speaker setups/soundcard setups since the problem occurred? uninstalled x-fi driver? resintall sound drivers? Set the correct playback device?

I’m pretty sure it’s from changing your speaker properties, try setting them back to 16bit / 44100 hz

This should explain your audiodg.exe issue.

Ya I changed speaker setups to 2 tower speakers and a 150w sub (connected with sub cable to center/LFE cause my xfi card doesnt have that). Ya the problem started occuring after i switched to this setup and onboard audio. I cannot turn off all enhancements cause I need to have "Enable Center/LFE Swap" and "Enable Bass Management" on for my sub. I'll try leaving the default format at 48000 hz dvd quality.

Humour us, and try turning those off, and see what happens? (we know you'll lose your sub) If that fixes it, then what you'll need ( I think, been a while since I did a lot with audio) is a subwoofer specific crossover to pull out the low frequency sound from the regular signal, and send it to the sub that way, while the sound (now minus the low frequency) carries on out the other output to the speakers. You may need an amp to drive that lot tho.

Notice: This post includes the best knowledge I have to hand, and is not definitive, nor 100% definite, it is also influenced by a VERY long day at work.
