[Wired] Angry Birds, Meet Jailbirds: New App Helps You Snitch on Your Friends - Page 2

Ugh, this is a horrible idea. Not sure how many old people have smart phones, but I could see a lot of bigoted old fogies empowered in reporting people who have absolutely nothing to do with suspicious activities.

You should go read some classics on this issue. Start with 1984, looking into Brave New World, and if you finish those, I'll see if I can find more on the subject.

I didn't see this post until the response above me, but just because you are a law-abiding citizen, doesn't mean you can't be affected or hassled by something like this. I'm usually the first one to say "if you're not doing something wrong then you have nothing to worry about." In principle that's true, and you shouldn't have to worry about something like getting arrested. But it doesn't mean you can't get harassed. With relying on average idiots, you can bet that would be a lot easier.

When you're finished with those, search out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_%28novel%29 - where people live in entire cities built of glass. People are numbers, all wear identical clothing, march in step, etc.

If he still can't figure out what "police state" means, and why it's dangerous even for the "law abiding citizen" then he's lost.

To paraphrase: 'Those who would sacrifice essential liberty for temporary protection deserve neither.'

I know old folk who consider driving down the road "suspicious activity."

I don't like how everything is going all of a sudden. I don't mean to go political, but this is serious. Monitors in Wal-Mart playing a message from Janet "Big Sis" Napolitano telling you to spy on your fellow man, and now this essentially doing the same thing. mad.gif

Unbelievable.
Whatever happened to keeping your head down and not saying nothing? Interfering in matters that don't concern you will have severe consequences in the real world.

Being a snitch is literally the lowest form of life imaginable. Handle your own business and stay out of other's.

There's nothing 'sudden' about it.

It just seems that way when you first start to notice.

Iam not saying it cannot be miss used but are you telling me you wouldnt use it to snap a pict after someone just carjacked you. Or you see some guy force a child into their car. I think the good can out weigh the bad if people have common sense. Everyone is not out to get you.

I think those would be a misuse of this app, you should call the regular police immediately if you see a child abduction or carjacking... Not load up some app.

And not everyone is out to get you, but some people in power don't think twice about curtailing your rights and stepping up surveillance on you. Its a non sequitur to say that everyone is out to get you; I don't think any reasonable people believe that and I didn't read anybody post that...
