[Wired] Galactic Pile-Up Leaves Behind Mysterious Dark Matter Core

Astronomers have found an enormous and strange clump of dark matter left behind following a violent collision of galaxy clusters.

The clump is located in the Abell 520 cluster, a diffuse collection of galaxies located 2.4 billion light-years away in the constellation Orion. The celestial object, sometimes called the Train Wreck cluster, is thought to be the remnant of a chaotic crash between several galaxy clusters.

...

A 2007 study of Abell 520 showed that it was mostly typical: Wherever astronomers saw visible matter, they found a large clump of dark matter. But there was one gigantic and perplexing “dark core” that should have attracted large amounts of visible matter yet contained almost no galaxies.

Abell stood in contrast to the Bullet Cluster, a similar galaxy cluster collision, which showed a textbook example of matter and dark matter distributions. Because of this, most astronomers dismissed the dark core observation in Abell 520 as a contamination or artifact in the data.

Now, a follow up analysis with the Hubble space telescope confirms the odd dark core exists, throwing researchers for a loop. The findings appear March 2 in The Astrophysical Journal.

We have. Dark matter or "anti-matter" is highly unstable though. If you mix even a drop of dark matter with even the slightest bit of 02 you could level a small neighborhood.

Dark matter is not anti-matter. Dark matter does not interact strongly with matter, anti-matter goes bang.

Anti-matter is the future of our space-fairing fuel ^^. Don't they already make very small amounts at a time in a lab?

Rockets filled with Anti-Matter? I wouldn't want to be anywhere nearby if it happened to crash, explode or implode.
And by "nearby" I mean the same side of the planet that the rocket is present.

I'll make sure to hollow out the moon and make it my spaceship before we ever start using anti-matter as fuel.

I watch the Science channel a lot so I understand what this is about. wink.gif See TV teaches you more (that you actually remember) than most books because they make it fun and exciting. You just need to find the right things.

The Bullet Cluster is what allowed them write the textbook, so of course it's going to match up exactly. But at times there has to be seperation between dark matter and normal matter. But eventually it will all look textbook because dark matter and normal matter attract each other.

Actually if you had a square foot of antimatter, you wouldn't want to be within 100,000 miles of the earth, our highest energy material is nuclear, and still it is so ineffient compared to pure energy. So if you had anything the size of a rocket shuttle, I wouldn't want to be 100 light years away.
