Can't get above 3.6Ghz with an I7-970?

Thread Starter
I'm having issues overclocking my i7-970 past 3.6. I've been out of the OC game for a while and the last one i OC'd was a Q6600 way back when. But from what i have ascertained it is probably that I have too fast of ram for the CPU to handle. I'm rocking 12gb of DDr3-2000 Corsair XMS3 (Triple Channel) on my Rampage III Extreme. Any thoughts?

if you think its the ram have you tried dropping the ram multi and loosening timings? what timings/multi/speed are you hitting 3.6ghz with?

The hichest i can change the MHZ to is 25, i'm thinking that my ram speed is faster than the CPU so i may need to underclock my RAM to get my CPU to go up to 4ghz
post #5 of 9
at ram speeds like that id guess raising the bclk at all could cause issues. you probably need to lower your ram ratio to get more out of the cpu, as it should be able to handle 4GHz no problem thumb.gif

I tried changing the RAM profile down to ddr3 1600 but the max multiplier i can do for the CPU is 25

you need to change your BCLK as you do not have an unlocked multiplier CPU

number one mistake people make when overclocking 1366 i7's is ignoring VTT and QPI voltage. if you want 4ghz you have to bump up that QPI to about 1.3-1.32, and the VTT up as well. on the R3E its called QPI/VTT voltage so just crank that up to 1.33. then the DRAM voltage to ~1.65-1.66. ignore the warning.

then make sure youre giving enough vcore. 1.35 roundabouts should be about right for a 4ghz oc. put your RAM at the divider closest to 2000mhz and set the timings correctly

edit: dont forget IOH voltage. put that to 1.25. make sure you have airlflow going over it though. these guys rely on airflow to stay cool. but 1.25 is safe. thumb.gif
