Today's Updates - Tuesday, March 6th

Hi everyone! I decided to bring out the release notes for this week a little early, because there is a lot of stuff in this release to get excited about! biggrin.gif Take a look below:

Features and Additions:

Community Albums

This release includes the long-in-development improvements to photo galleries to add support for community albums. This is Phase 2 out of 3 of the overall Image Galleries overhaul we've been working on. Briefly, here are the improvements to photo galleries included in Community Albums:
  1. Community Albums: We've added a new type of album that multiple members can contribute to.
  2. Categories/Portal Page: Categories provide a top level of organization for albums.
  3. Improved Uploader: The uploader has been updated to seamlessly handle uploading to community albums.

1. Community Albums

For the most part, community albums look like any regular album, except for two main differences:
  • Multiple members can contribute to the album
  • When members contribute, they can add multiple images at a time. These images become what we call a "photoset".

On the individual photo view, you'll notice that:
  • Detail photos (if any) are shown alongside in the side module to keep photosets linked together
  • Users can upload multiple "sets" to a community album
  • Members can now easily add photos to an existing set within a community album
  • You can now edit the image caption and other properties directly from the photo viewing page (instead of having to go to the album's Edit Photos page)
  • There is now an "Original" button to view the original, unscaled photo (the one originally uploaded to the site)

Since everybody loves cake, we'll use images of cake to show off the new features. smile.gif

2. Categories/Portal Page
We've added the ability to put albums into categories. Categories provide a top level of organization for image galleries. A few things to note:
  • It's a simple 2-level hierarchy: category, and album
  • Categories contain both community and personal albums

Example categories for "Events", "Gumpaste", and "Holidays":
612

Perhaps the most significant change of all is the complete overhaul of the Gallery homepage, aka the "portal". When you click the Gallery link in the main navigation, you'll now see something like this the below image, with these features:
  • Popular Albums - albums that are seasonably popular
  • Newest - newest photosets in community albums, and newest personal albums
  • An alphabetical list of image categories
  • A listing of all image tags, similar to the existing navigation system

Since a picture speaks a thousand words, here is an example (sticking with our cake theme).

Bugs and Fixes:
  1. 7061 - From the text area of the BBCode editor, the tab key now takes you to the Preview button, then the Submit button, and then through to the rest of the page. Some users were accidentally tabbing to "Cancel" and obliterating their posts.
  2. 8377 - We updated the wording of the setting that pauses your immediate subscriptions after one email. Some users were confused about what this preference does, but the new verbiage should make it crystal clear.
  3. 8351 - Escape codes for special characters like apostrophes should no longer show up in the homepage "site stats" modules.
  4. 8485, 8471 - We are cleaning up a few permissions related glitches, including some users having trouble posting to their own created threads, and moderators not being cleared from the roll call.
  5. 8064 - Posts submitted from Tapatalk can no longer circumvent your word censor.
  6. 8419 - PM searches no longer fail because you included a space in your search term.
  7. 8458 - Problems with the "change recipients" function in a PM were resolved.
  8. 8461 - We clarified the error messaging that users see when they try to filter the activity feed by subscriptions but have no subscriptions set up.
  9. 8524 - IE users of the Rich Editor sometimes didn't see smileys in posts they quoted. This error will no longer occur, though we cannot retroactively fix affected posts.
  10. 8535 - We resolved a pagination bug in PM search results.
  11. 8521 - Line breaks in the signature editor should more closely match the output in the published signature now.
  12. 8526 - Usernames are no longer lowercased in PM notification emails.
  13. 8291 - Signature and rig content sometimes would not update without submitting the form twice. This is now fixed.

A slew of new fixes and features came in on the Moderator side of things too, which obviously aren't mentioned above, but should bring about quicker response to reports and happier moderators. smile.gif

...bump/reminder for release day. As is usual, you can expect a period of very brief downtime this afternoon (probably after 1pm PST) as the updates push out.

Actually, I don't know if you saw Andy's update on the Huddler side, but this was delayed until tomorrow to give it a little more time in QA smile.gif So just an FYI, you'll be seeing that downtime while we update tomorrow.
