Here's a validation.

What are you linking me? If the GPU is running a 100% while the CPU is not, then the GPU is the bottleneck. If the CPU is running at 100% and the GPU's are not, then the CPU is the bottlneck.

Those links show exactly what I'm saying. My 3820 only needs about 60% to fully run my 6950's, so my 6950's are the bottleneck.

Right now my 6950 2gb crossfire set-up is the bottleneck because they run at 100%. Did you misunderstand something I said?

Interesting links non the less though, I shall read them through.

Hey viperwolf,
I don't know if you've gotten the help you were looking for, but I was able to get my 3820 stable at 4.5ghz (prime 95 for roughly 11 hrs 15 minutes).
The settings I used are
cpu multiplier: 36
BCLK: 125
Core current limit: 275
speedstep: disabled
Ram Settings: auto
VRM protection: Enabled
CPU Core Voltage: FIxed mode at 1.335v
cpu load line calibration: level 1

I'm new to overclocking and messing with bios settings, so I really don't know if your bios has any different names for some of the settings I used.

If anyone out there thinks I could get a more efficient 4.5 overclock on my i7-3820, please dont hesitate to let me know.
I'll see if i could lower the voltage, and run prime95 overnight again, but for now, I got to go to work. Good luck with your overclock thumb.gif

What does your Vcore read with CPU-Z when at full load?

Hey guys. smile.gif

I see that two of you (MacG32 included biggrin.gif) have the EXTREME4-M mATX motherboard. How would you rate it?

My next upgrade is 2011 to replace my ageing X58 setup, and I wanted a mATX beast with a 6 core. It's either this or the Rampage IV, which I hate the look of, and is expensive.

Good points/bad points? My main question is, is that fan noisy, is it an irritating whine, is it on all the time, and is it even needed? The whole setup would be under water, not sure if they do blocks for it yet. I doubt it.

If I remember correctly, it was at 1.328. I'll verify it when I get home.

The only time I have herd my SB fan spin up is when I had 2-3 air cooled cards folding at 100% usage, other than that the fan never spins up on my board. This is simply because the cards extend over the SB cooler, causing it to head up.

I would assume if your fully under water, with decent case airflow, you shouldn't ever hear it spin up. If you do, you can always up the temperature that it starts up at to 55-60c.

That sounds about right, I don't think there would be a more efficient way to do it. I just wanted to make sure your Vcore wasn't higher than need be after LLC at load.

I recommended an asrock extreme6 x79 for a friends new build with a 3820. I also gave him a link to this thread for information! I think he is a member (not sure) but encouraged him to read and post in this thread. After having the asrock p67 board I felt it was a great board and value.

His build went very good, using an H80 with gentle typhoons in push/pull, a crucial M4, and using his existing 460 SLI until the 680 comes back in stock, all in a lian li K62.

Howdy SmokinWaffle biggrin.gif The Extreme4-M is surely a beast and the 6 core needs water or better to achieve it's max potential. The fan is silent and set to the lowest speed in the BIOS and only turns on after 50 degrees. Even maxed out, it's not any louder than a small, medium priced case fan. I had a few problems early on with my USB keyboard locking up the board, but it's been fixed in the latest BIOS update. It overclocks so easily and effortlessly, but the CPU throws out tons of heat. With the Noctua, I can safely sit at a 4.2-4.3 daily overclock. If it was wet, I'd easily hit 5 or better. I'd venture to say that a stable 5.5+ would be my aim on water. There's a VRM waterblock available here, which looks like this. wink.gif
