I bought an X79 Extreme7 with i7 3820 from Amazon and they arrived today.
I have never built an intel system before. Actually I am not very experienced (a total noob redface.gif). I would like to ask you guys something.
When I inspected the socket (with a magnifying glass) pins looked a bit strange to me. Half of them are tilted at one angle and other half are tilted at complelety opposite angle. They all look inline, however kinda angled. As I have never seen an intel socket before (especially a 2011), I dont know if this is how the pins are supposed to be. I was expecting them to be upright (sort of like pins on amd cpus). I tried google to find anything. A few people are asking the same question but couldnt find a satisfactory answer. As I have read a lot of horror stories about bent pins, I am really worried. So, are the pins in 2011 socket supposed to be standing at an angle?
I would really appreciate if you can enlighten me.
Thank you all smile.gif

If the pins are perfectly align then they are not bent.

Bent pins are obvious because they will go against the "grain" of the other pins. Also, if you have bent pins, when you place the CPU into the socket, you will notice the CPU does not lay perfectly flat, and it might have a lot of give or wobble to it.

If it seats into the socket nicely, you should be all set to lock it down, and continue your build!

Hi rctrucker and thanks for your reply.

Just put the motherboard and the cpu together. CPU sits perfectly flat. Installed heatsink&fan, rams and graphics card and the 1st boot was successful thumb.gif
UEFI setup started and recognized cpu, ram, graphics card, mouse, keyboard and whole uefi utility is working. I guess, so far, this is good news smile.gif

Cant install OS as yet coz hdd and dvd drive havent arrived yet. Possibly tomorrow or the next day I think. (Still using my other computer and looking at the beauty of the new one lol.) smile.gif

Your pins are normal. A bent pin would stick out like a sore thumb, not lining up with the rest.

Hey B rad,

Thanks for your answer too. smile.gif
I guess everything is ok since boot was successful and could enter the UEFI setup. As I said before, it sees all the components correctly. Is there anything else that I should be checking at this point?

There isn't too much you can do from the bios, other than checking the functionality of everything and it seems like you have that covered. thumb.gif

Hi again,
I had contacted Asrock Technical Department about this and here is the official answer I got.

"Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting ASRock.

For LGA2011 socket, there will be half of the pins tilted one side and another half tilted in opposite direction.

Please refer attached photo.
Socket 2011.JPG 169k .JPG file

Thanks for your e-mail.

Good Day,

ASRock TSD"

This information could be useful for the first time builders like me. smile.gif

Hey fellow ASRockers(I know it sound funny but that didn't stop me! :D),

been wondering, has anyone found some nice, non-restrictive mosfet/vrm waterblocks for the ASRock X79 Extreme 4-m board?

I've looked around a bit but I either must be using the wrong keywords or am just bad at searching but I haven't found anything ;o
