New to Folding - Disorientated - Page 2

Thread Starter
thanks all, juano your guide was very helpful thank you.
now i am folding on the CPU without problem , but when i turn on the GPU client i get hard lags and mini freezes + whining noise from the GPU( the PPD grow up), its realy annoying me.
can i fix that somehow?

The whining noise is completely normal and there isn't anything you can really do to get rid of it. It's tied to core clock speed though so if it is at a pitch/frequency that is really annoying to you you can try to raise or lower your core clock by a little to change the tone of it. With my GTX 260 c216 I was able to make the whine almost inaudible by changing the clocks a little bit, but my 460 and 580 still have it (the 460 is pretty loud but the 580 is okay). Most important things to know about the whine though is that first, it's not a problem or sign of failure or any other thing you need to worry about, and second it's not folding's fault, any other program that puts a high load on your card will make the same whine but it may be slightly different frequencies for different load levels.

The unresponsiveness while GPU folding the only two things I've found that solve that problem are the first thing to try is reinstalling the GPU drivers with a clean install and maybe even use driversweeper in safe mode to start from absolute scratch and then install the drivers. FYI the 295.73 WHQL drivers have a problem with folding so I'd reccomend the 290.53 beta ones, they have worked well. If the driver reinstall/driversweeper doesn't get rid of it then the only other thing I've found that works is a complete OS reinstall. I'm not positive why it works, but it's worked every time for me. I would guess it's just a matter of the software/driver environment being less than ideal for folding after having a OS get used for months or a year or so (with the many different GPU driver and OC programs installs that entails) and then installing GPU folding on top of that is just not ideal, but when starting from a fresh OS I've always had GPU folding work flawlessly and haven't had any unresponsiveness come back after months of use.

My 5770 while folding had a whine for the first couple weeks with a high overclock. After a couple weeks though folding 24/7, it went away.

Same with my FX-8150, for the first month, any OC over 4.4 led to intense whine just loading Windows, now it only whines if I push it to 4.8 at full load.
