6970 and arctic xtreme plus II temperature problem

Thread Starter
Bought an xtreme plus 2 for my 6970, instaled it , temps were fine however in the mean time some heatsinks for vram and vrm fell (due to me not reading innstructions right - did not know what cure means )
took it off , fixed the problem (used some thermal pads instead of theram adhesive G1 that came ) , scraped the pre-applied thermal pad, applied old AS5 (tried 2 times using diferent methods of appling the paste) and im having huge temps using furmark burn for only 1min -102 C
vrm temps seem fine 65c.... could i have damaged the card using as5? or maybe its not seated right , tho i have allready tried reseating it 2 times now

i should mention that i have a second card with xtreme plus 2, for which the operation was succesfull however with the coolers pre-applied thermal pad.
Touching it does not seem that hot ( compared with the other card, CF ) which would indicate the heatsink is not making good contact (the pre-applied thermal pad was bigger than the layer of AS5 iv placed )

LE:

card is buzzing when 100% loaded with furmark ( its not the coil noise :S ) buzzing intermitenly ( worst case scenario - could it be short-circuit noise ? :SS ) and also throttles but without giving any BSOD or any indication that its malfuctioning althrough i didnt realy run the furmark test for more than 1 min . Idle temps are about 55 C with case open and 23C ambient temp .

Right now i have taken the cooler off for the 3rd time to check if i accidentaly spread AS5( conductive paste :S ) on the GPU side pins ( or whatever thoes are arround the IHS itself ).
I realise the AS5 has huge curing time ( now i know what that means ) however this is not the first time i have applied AS5 and i should not be having such huge temps

For peeps who want to know how the xtreme plus 2 performs on a single card 6970 here are my temps for the good card using the crapy pre-applied thermal pad :

23 C ambient temp , closed case / single card in first slot air cooled CPU , i have 33 C idle ( with powerplay clocks of 250 for gpu and 250 for mem , about 40 idle full clocks and a max of 65 C in furmark using maximum burn settings , after 1h with the arctic vents on manual 50 % ( innaudible ) on 100% very slight noise ( prob not at all for some ) 60 C

Sorry for my confusing post however i am abit scaerd i might have permanently damaged the card frown.gif

It shouldnt be a problem to use other TIM then that what come's with the Accelero set.
I have the same cooler and use different TIM aswell. [MX-4]

It still sounds like a bad mount even though you have sayed you reseated it 3 times now.
Also keep in mind that AS5 has a long curing time. It should never reach 100+ degrees though.

In Furmark i cant even reach over 70 degrees with an overclocked card and 50% fan.
With a simple 24/7 overclock i cant even reach over 65 degrees.

Have you maybe put a ring to much on the mounting system ? lifting the cooling block slighty up..
I would reseat again and check the mounting system. [the bolts, nuts and rings]

as i said ( tho i guess it was a LE after u started writing ) my first card with the cooler never goes beyond 65 C with 50% fan closed case and sort of bad case air flow . Its also overclocked to 900 / 1440 with 20+ more power

Im am definetly not an expert on appling theram paste ( iv only tried 2 times and now have the card on my desk trying to figure out what i should do next )

checked if its a tight fit with the back plate all seems fine ... frown.gif ,

not sure exaclt what the GPU #2 and GPU #3 temps are in GPU-Zs monitoring tool but im assuming the VRM ( on wich i got a sink placed ) but thoes never go above 65 C ( when the card reaches the 100 C in the GPU #1 reading assuming thats the GPU die temp reading )

or maybe the GPU #1 reading ( in GPU-Z ) is something else, in that case i got something else also overheating :S

could the AS5 short circuit something ? should i just get MX-4 and be done with it ?

Just run Furmark for you on a 6950 but with unlocked shaders, basicly a 6970 like yours and mildly overclocked.

418

I think it works like this, though i am not a 100% sure:

GPU Temperature is the GPU Core
GPU Temp. #1 to GPU Temp. #3 = The Vram temperature
Vreg Temperature = The VRM Temperature.

To apply TIM i just use a pie size dot in the middle and let the pressure of the heatsink spread it out.

*If the AS5 would make contact with the circuit i bet you will have more problems then just heat.

That buzzing noise can also come from the air going through the heatsink.
Play with the fan speed smile.gif

i wish it where that but imho its something else :S ( much worse ) ,it literally only happened when the card reached 100 C and started to throttle , was a weird buzzing ( feint ) kind of like a small electrical arc buzzing . hope that wasnt it tho smile.gif) )

fan was 50 on manual ,, so not sure about air going through

also the one thing i found weird is that at 100 C touching the side heatsink + copper pipes it felt just slightly warm .. compared to the other card which was alot hotter ( at 70C GPU temp ) which would indicate hopefully that it wasn't seated correctly.

after i took it apart i notice that one corner of the GPU die was probably not making contact ( i would estimate it at about 20 % in the corner )

would that make the difference in temps ?

I think it would make a difference yes.

When you tighten the screw, first tighten them slightly by hand and do it crossed... like first upper left screw, then lower right screw, then upper right screw and then lower left screw.
Then tighten them up as good as you can without making the bolt or nut snap in the same order again.

*also.. have you upped the voltage ?
HD69xx series VRM's have a hard time once you up the voltage and get really hot.

Look when i up the voltage slightly:
975/1280mhz @ 1.15V
65 degrees overall GPU temp but look at the VRM, its 94 degrees !!!
