I doubt it's bottlenecking that much..probably driver problems.Newer card..Immature drivers.IMO
My AMD chip can play any game smoothly. The architecture isn't that drastically different than yours.

Well I can tell you this. I had an AMD 945 quad core 3.0ghz with 2 GTX480's in SLI on three 1080p monitors....

I noticed that in bf3 I could only play it on one monitor in med/high settings to get 60 FPS.

I also noticed that my CPU usage was 100% while my GPU was showing 40%

so...

I bought a 3960x processor and the other parts to go with it.

Now I can play the game with everything maxed out at 5760*1080 resolution at 60FPS.

Now my processor sits at 20% usage in BF3....

CPU bottlenecks are real lol. The "any quad core will handle games well" is a lie.

Turns out having more cores is only good when those cores work fast.

The HD 6950 has been out for a very long time now, so im sure the drivers are up to par rolleyes.gif

And I was originally going to get a FX 8150, but I'm going to intel because their faster, cheaper, offer more features, are cooler, overclock better and use less power. What's the harm in joining the winning side?

Yes this right here. If your vram is maxing out, the CPU is not the issue. I play Skyrim on my system that's in my sig on a 5 year old mobo@ 1920x1200 and I use a good number of texture mods, ambient occlusion and play with all settings at maximum. Skryrim HD being one of of them and the FXAA post process injector which eats a ton of Vram with average rates from 54-65 fps. I have to run the light edition HD texture mod along with the FXAA post processor injector or my 1.3GB 570GTX will run into a huge Vram problem and my performance goes goes down the drain.

The 840 has no L3 cache so it's really hard to compare them to to the higher end Denebs as in terms of performance but you are loosing some due to no L3 cache. There was something I read a while back on which games/programs benefit off L3 and some that don't mind no L3 cache. (wish I could find it)

Thanks guys,
The reason i Think there is a huge bottleneck is i cant even play Skyrim on highest settings. I have to have low shadows, and no AA or AF in order to get 60fps. And yet i see people with a 2500K, and a smaller graphics card playing it easy as pie on highest settings.

Skyrim only utilizes two cores properly as far as I remember.

I also find this to be unlikely. I run a complete STEP over the base high resolution texture pack, plus about 30 extra mods through NMM, along with a performance heavy ENB, on just what you see in my sigrig and easily sit at a minimum of 40FPS. As long as he's not running an ENB (as their performance can be hit and miss across a variety of systems) he should be fine with that graphics card. When he's experiencing bad stuttering, or consistent BSOD's, despite being at high FPS then he's likely got a VRAM problem.

Low FPS here are more likely his CPU than anything else. Especially with shadows. My suggestion is to try the game on Ultra, turn off Anti Aliasing and use FXAA. Set Shadows to High (I get a 25FPS hit just from having this on Ultra from High). Turn off AF and set it on your graphics card drivers instead.

cheaper? nope, cooler? nope, oc better? nope. intel is faster but significantly more expensive unless you can find one dirt cheap.
