PSU making a specific weird noise.

Thread Starter
So I recently moved my PC from an Antec 900 case to a NZXT Switch 810 case, and since then I have noticed that my PSU (an Antec 750W) makes a weird noise, but only at specific times. I have made a video which should showcase the sound. It happens, for example, when I'm playing Mass Effect 2. When I alt-tab to Windows, the sound immediately disappears. I alt-tab back to ME2, the sound is back.

You can hear the sound from 0:00 - 0:09. I then alt-tab from ME2 to Windows, and the sound is gone from 0:09 - 0:14, I then alt-tab back to ME2, and the sound re-appears.

I don't think this is fan related. Anyone else know what this might be? I have thought this to be a power issue, but when I run my CPU and GTX570 at full load (Prime95 and FurMark) the noise is not there.

After playing ME2 some more, I noticed some other weird things. It seems to be dependent on how much is rendered by the graphics card?

Anyone that can make anything out of this?

This makes me feel better about my systems noise.

Haha, it's really not that bad. The phone is literally pressed against the case, that's why the fans seem so loud.

Is the noise coming from the PSU, the monitor, or your speakers?

I've had PSUs do that under load. Usually they die a while later.

Noise is definitely coming from the PSU.

Do you by chance have an Antec TruePower New 750? This happens to me sometimes, but not often. I just ignore it and it goes away. I haven't had any problems with it, but you can always RMA.

From my experience it seems that your psu is about to die. I had a similar noise on my zalman psu last year, and sure enough, the random shutdowns started after a short while, had to rma. But each case is different so i hope it doesn't happen to you smile.gif

Well, I guess this gives me an excuse to buy a new, more powerful PSU, even though 750W should be more than enough for my current build. What's the standard warranty on PSU's? I bought mine at Fry's electronics, probably won't be able to return it there right? Have to deal with the manufacturer?
