Used x4 955 - $75 Ebay/OCN
Open Box MSI 870S $70 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130309R
Gskill 2x2gb 1333 memory $28 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231179
RaidMax 530w PS $40 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152028
Samsung Spinpoint 500gb HDD $85 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152181
XFX 5770 $105, $89 A/R - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127490
Total $405...$390 A/R.
Not the greatest machine ever, but for $400 its not a bad PC.

they restocked the 965, 960T, 970 OEM, 980 OEM, 975 OEM, and then got the 1045T which is instock aswell... so Newegg has Phenom II's thumb.gif best out of them all is the 960T with it being a Thuban Chip Quad core with potential of being a 6 Core thumb.gif

400 bucks.... not even worth building. He will end up deciding he is not happy with the 400 dollar "gaming" computer and realize he should have waiting until he had a larger budget for a better system. If he goes through with a 400 dollar system for gaming he is going to be really screwing himself.

So you say he'd be better off having nothing to game on? I've built plenty of sub $400 rigs. If you live by a microcenter it will be a lot easier to do.

$35 ~ $50 - Sandy bridge dual core celeron or pentium
$55 - 1155 matx board
$30 - 8gb ram
$45 - corsair 400w psu
$80- 500gb hard drive
$18- dvd burner
$120- video card, matter of preference but amd may have better value in the price segment.

=$398 with the pentium

Microcenter also has a free motherboard with a $99 fx 4100 so would be the same price.

I just picked up a used system for $200 with a q6600, 4gb ram, 2x250gb hd, vendetta 2 cooler, gtx 260, corsair gs700, antec p182b case, 2xdvd burners off craigslist. But if I'd had $400 I would of built new.

hes better off with a 200 dollar console.... hate saying that... but seriously he will have to play his games on a lower resolution or suffer horrible frames with a low end gpu like that. If I only had 400 I think i would just go with a console and call it a day.

Schmuckley build is pretty dam good however i personally would swap that cpu with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103995 so that you could unlock and get 6 core worst case scenario is you have a 5 core cpu instead of a 6 core. Also thought i would add this http://www.overclock.net/t/1005739/what-unlocks-the-unlockable-cpu-reference-list alsso the mobo that schmuckley chose allows you to unlock cpus too. ( eather cpu will work they can be unlocked)

Ratjack some people actually don't care about graphics and what not as long as its fun and not laggy as hell.

This is my build however the one Schmuckley reccamended is a solid build ( my cpu and gpu suck alot lol ohwell)
cpu- AMD Athlon II X2 260 Regor 3.2ghz 63$ (new)
mobo MSI 870-G45 75$ (new)
ram- gskill 35$ (new)
hdd- 250 gb 25$ (used)
gpu- 7800 gtx 45$ (used)
PSU- ozc mod 750 o 700w - 80$(new)
antec 900- about 90 or 80$ cant remember

comes out to 403 - 413$ and it handles crysis and cod pretty dam well and this was last year in July.

wouldn't a APU work alittle better as that has actually a good GPU inside it that can play BF3 at around 30fps with decent settings, would save alittle money in terms of GPU aswell for other things that maybe needed redface.gif

i did a APU set up tho doesn't have a case and hdwhich luckly any case will work if they can fit a M-ATX on it came to 349.95 biggrin.gif with free shipping on all biggrin.gif also to there's a $20 rebate on the power supply and a $15 Gift card which technically if they are redeemed and you get the money in hand it reduces the price by $35 which can go towards a decent HD and case which is good cause we can't determine how much space he'll need so he can pick out what Hard Drive HE THINKS he'll need biggrin.gifsmile.gif so in turns it'll be within budget thumb.gif
