CPU 50 Degrees Celsius, And Fan At Maximum, What To Do?

Thread Starter
My AMD Athlon 2800+ with 2050 MHz (Barton) is cooled by a Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2.
The fan speed is currently at its maximum (1900 rpm) and the CPU temp is over 50 degrees celsius. The tower is already open.
That seems like too much.

Before even thinking about overclocking, would be good to know if I can do anything and if there is anything that could cool this thing down.
I dont want a expensive water cooling.

Thanks

Well I should start off by saying that's a pretty good temp for that processor.

There are some things you can do though - I'll list them in order of cost.
  1. Clean all the dust out of the heatsink and fan blades
  2. Get some better thermal paste
  3. Get a new fan for the heatsink
  4. Get a new heatsink and fan

And remember with those procesors you don't even have to get really worried until 60-70C so you've got a ways to go.

re-seat the cooler on the processor...and use some AS5

then upgrade to a Big Typhoon, you won't be sorry

That's a very very good temprature, u don't have to worry at all if that is your load temp.

The max temp you want to allow that Athlon to is about 55c. You are not far from it. I do not reccomend overclocking at all untill you get the cooling situation under hand... I would start with fishies suggestions, but before doing step 4, i would suggest lapping the heatsink, and the cpu if your daring. This can bring up to a 10-12c drop in load temps.

For thermal paste get some arctic silver 5.
Lapping kits can be found cheaply at easypckits.com

Also you may want to try and improve case airflow. Do this by insuring that you have gfood flow fans in the case, and setup so that air flows in the front/bottom. and exits the rear/top of the case.

I'd say 65 would be the max for the Athlon XP. They are 130 nm chips, so they will run a bit hotter, and be able to take more heat. What's the stock vcore on that chip, like 1.6v?

You need better airflow in your case. With the proper airflow temps will increase with the side of the case open.

You should also think about getting a new fan for your heatsink.

And don't go over 55C for extended periods of time unless you want it to burn out quickly.

My 2400+ Has a max load of 50C (and dropping as AS5 cures) at 2500mhz 1.73 vcore

o_O WHAT?
The max temp you would generally want to keep your barton under is 55c, and no higher! Dont believe people that say 65, because thats WAYY too hot! id suggest an aftermarket cooler such as a Big Typhoon (lapped), as it will drop your temps by 10-15c, easily w/ Artic Silver 5.
