Laptop DOES NOT want to boot on linux

I'll make this post quick. I'm trying to get Peppermint Two on my old Inspiron 5100, and I just can't seem to get it to boot. After burning about 5 DVDs and CDs, I finally got the laptop to work with one and boot from the CD. I got the the Peppermint boot menu that says "Run from Live CD" "Install to hard disk" "test disk for errors" and all of that.

What ever option I choose, it will lock up for about 10 seconds, then the screen will go gray with a flashing underscore at the top left. After a few seconds of that, the screen goes black, then a white box covers a bit less than quarter of the top left of the screen, another 5 seconds and it fills up with accented Us for a split second, then fills the screen with endlessly scrolling text that says "Failed to allocate" and has a number in KB below it. It's something like 590,000KB, then it has a line that has a zero, then one with a 2. That message repeats endlessly until I shut the computer down.

I've tried booting it with a hard drive that I put the same OS on, and it looped a different message, that filled about half the screen.
At this point, after a good 10 hours of attempts and searching online for answers (which I could not find) I'm clueless.

Edit- Tried it on another computer, went through the same screens, but did NOT have the "Failed to allocate" message. It only goes to a terminal. It does not go to an actual GUI, like it usually does.

Either the ISO is bad or your burner can't burn disks. I remember the burner in my computer was really bad at burning Linux LiveCD's, and that is when I turned to doing USB installs.

Get a big enough USB drive, install Unetbootin, and install Peppermint via USB flash drive. If it still doesn't work redownload the ISO.

I can't boot from USB with my laptop, otherwise I would use my external hard drive with all of my linux distros on it to boot.

Have another computer that can do a dependable burn? Otherwise you're going to have to probably burn a few disks before you get a good one.

I have 3 others I could feasibly use, but I'm all out of blank CDs rolleyes.gif . Do you think that it's just a bad burn?

It is either a bad ISO or a bad burn. Either way, the disc is bad. Sucks that you are out of blank CDs. I am assuming the laptop is pretty old, and doesn't boot off usb drives. Have you tried looking at the hard drive order to see if the BIOS adds the usb drive to that list?

Right now you are screwed until you get a new disk. May be a good idea to get a re-writeable disc.

MD5?

Does that check out?

If so: bad cd or hard-drive

If no: bad iso/download.

[EDIT] I think that you have either bad mem - or bad hdd.

I have checked, no usb to be found. I can pick up more CDs tomorrow.

To respond to newphase, MD5?

Most of the time when you download something you're given an MD5 checksum to compare against a downloaded file to make sure it's the file you downloaded and to make sure it's all there and correct.

Ok, i figured out how do check that, and it matched up with the MD5 checksum on the website. I even redownloaded and burned a new CD at the lowest speed, and I'm getting the exact same problem.
