Cayman is much hotter than Tahiti so this makes no sense. The 7990 should be easier to cool than the 6990. What's more likely is they wanted Pitcairn out first and pushed the 7990 back a bit.

They made the mistake with HD 5970. Why Top their card? When Nvidia releases GTX680 they will take the glory again with HD 7990.

The real sucky part is no Trifire on 2 PCI slots. sucks... I really wanted to get a 7990
post #16 of 78
Guys, the source of this is OBR, a known AMD hater who went as far as faking slides pre-7970 launch to try to convience everyone that it was going to suck. Just as we know that Tahiti doesn't suck (well it is not great in terms of price) this rumor is also FAKE.

Just like others have said, the 7990 will generate less heat than the 6990 due to the node shrink just like how the 7970 is more efficient than the 6970. As such, it makes no sense that AMD can't make a cooler for New Zealand. Not to mention that the card is launching in Q2 meaning that the cooler design was likely decided upon long ago.

This is just by trolling by OBR so move along please -- nothing to see here. smile.gif

This. I've frankly had it with all of these posts from OBR who has admitted to making stuff up in the past. This is not news. Just some idiot spouting nonsense on his blog.

The HD 7970 uses roughly the same power as an HD 6970, but it's 40-50% faster. If they can create a cooler good enough for the HD 6990, which is dual crippled 6970's, they should most definitely be able to do the same with a 7990, or dual crippled 7970's.

There must be more at stake here. I don't buy that they can't engineer a good enough cooler.

Do you think the 7990 will clear $1,000? I mean the 7970s are already $600. I can't imagine very many people will pay that much for one GPU.
