I'll take a stab at it. It seems as if Crysis 2 is bottlenecked either with geometry/front end or with ROPs/pixel power. Since the 7870 has an identical front end, geometry engine count and ROP count compared to the 7970, and is clocked higher, it beats it.
I'm actually pretty damn impressed. I didn't think it'd be the 6970 by this much, if at all. The die size is what gets me all warm and tingly though: 212mm²? That's awesome. When Nvidia comes into play and drives prices down, this thing is going to be awesome bang for the buck.
Still, I definitely wouldn't recommend buying a new GPU right now. Wait until Kepler... not because I think Kepler's going to be the GPU king, but because it'll drive down prices. It could end up being better, which would be great as it'd drive prices down further, but regardless of Kepler's performance, I think it's a good idea to hold off. One month isn't that bad of a wait when it could save you 50-100 bucks.

3 GPUs in 3 months. That's really fast. They're all done now though... at least if you aren't counting the 7990, but is anyone really excited for that?
