Crossfire 6950 - 2nd card not detected after BSOD/reboot

I have a Sapphire 6950 Dirt3 and 6950 Toxic in crossfire. I have been running this setup for about 2 weeks but have not really gamed on it yet. Today I was playing Skyrim on this setup for the first time and it crashed with the sound looping, which I attributed to my sound card. I rebooted and saw that Windows was no longer detecting my second GPU, which is the Toxic. I shut down for a few minutes and booted again and it seemed to be fine. Just to be safe, I uninstalled and reinstalled the AMD drivers, even though this does not seem to be a driver issue since the card was not present in device manager.

I decided to disable my sound card, and use onboard audio for the time being, and started up Skyrim again. Within a few minutes, I got BSOD 0x124. I understand this may be linked to vcore, so I decided to temporarily tone down my OC to rule out that problem and rebooted. After restarting the GPU is missing again and restarting another time does not bring it back. Shutting down for a few minutes and then starting the computer does bring it back, however.

At this point, I am wondering if this may be a hardware issue with the second GPU. The card is not overclocked, however, and I am able to run Furmark and BOINC for extended periods without problems. Any idea why the GPU would disappear and come back only after shutting the computer down?

Try removing the card that is detected properly and booting up that way.

Thanks, I actually had no issues with booting and using the computer, whether the card that was not being detected was in the slot or not. After shutting down, waiting a bit, booting, and confirming the second card was detected, I turned off crossfire and played some Skyrim with just the first card. I had no crashes in game. Tomorrow I will switch the cards and try playing only from the other one, to see if the card is in fact faulty or if this is a crossfire issue.

The fact that the card was not detected after a reboot, but only after a full shutdown, break, and boot, makes me wonder if it could be a matter of the crash being caused by heat and the card not working properly until it cools down. This behavior is similar to what happens when overclocking a CPU on a motherboard with poorly cooled VRMs, where if the computer crashes from the VRMs overheating it needs to cool down before it will boot again. The second card runs a bit hot, up to 83C in game. Though I can't imagine that temperature being hot enough, could an overheating component cause this problem?

It's driver issue. If you have Catalyst 12.1 CAP3 in your system, uninstall it.

Install this (if you have to) Catalyst 12.2 CAP1 http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/crossfirex-app-profiles.aspx

Then you have to set this (Catalyst 12.1 an above), otherwise crash/BSOD (self explanatory);

AMD CrossFireX Mode for 3D Applications.

Under the drop down list:

  1. Disabled. This option turns off CrossFireX multi-GPU acceleration.
  2. Default uses whatever the global system default option is, or whatever AMD has configured, if the game already has a profile in the CAP package.
  3. AFR Friendly, which is for games which generally work well with Alternate Frame Rendering (AFR).
  4. Optimize 1x1. This is another AFR option, but with optimizations for 1x1 surfaces. The idea is, if AFR Friendly has problems, Optimize 1x1 is another option to try.
  5. Use AMD Pre-Defined Profile allows us to select the CrossFireX configuration of another game and apply it to the one for which we are making a profile.

Thanks, you were right about it being a driver issue. Catalyst 12.2 CAP 1 seems to have solved the problem with crashes and also improved smoothness of graphics.
