Am I Missing Something with Windows 8?

I Have to be honest and say I'm really not liking Windows 8 frown.gif I havnt used it in fairness, but seeing what im seeing im just..not really interested in even trying it out right now, I dont have a touchscreen, I dont WANT a touchscreen on my main computer (I see no benefits at all to it for my home desktop..also it means giving up my lovely IPS monitor) and everything im seeing, every demo, is showing off the OS on the touchscreen where I guess the interface makes some sense..but i still think all this "apps" this and "apps" that is really dumbing the OS down unnecessarily...

I'm not a fuddyduddy or someone whos afraid of change, its just that I HATE the Metro interface on my 360, its confusing, convoluted, and i still cant find things very easily (Heck i spent 30 minutes earlier trying to figure out how to play videos that were saved on the HDD earlier, this used to be a simple matter of going to video, choosing the hard drive and playing the video i downloaded from the XBLM, Turns out now i have to download the Zune player and then go into that app to play anything i downloaded..which strikes me as a step backwards) I wish there was an option to go back to the old interface.. The current one is highly inefficient in my opinion...too much fumbling around to get to anything

But back to my windows 8 concerns

The elimination of the start menu makes me a bit eh...sure i already have icons for most programs right on my desktop but the elimination of the start menu still makes me feel sad... And I do hope i can completely disable that Metro interface garbage and just have the desktop like im used to now...Again, its not that i dislike change, i just dont really like Metro, and dont see any advantage to using it when i dont have and dont want a touchscreen on my main pc

I'm not trying to start a flame war..im not trying to "bash" it, im just wondering if theres something i've missed... I really dont want to be one of "Those guys" clinging to the old OS and dealing with new software not supporting it or something...

So sell me on it, Whats so great about Windows 8? Why should I be excited for it? Because I'm really not... Am I missing some cool things because all the microsoft stuff is focusing so hard on the Metro interface

The start menu isn't eliminated, I don't know why people keep saying that. It just looks completely different, is the size of your whole screen using large icons more like a smart phone and the start "button" is invisible but it's still in the same place it's always been. From what I've seen, everything else on it is mostly unchanged but I really can't see any benefits of using this on anything without a touch screen.

Tried Windows 8 prefer the none and trusted interface. If they give the option to have the new metro gui on touch devices and the standard Windows interface on mouse driven devices then I cant see a problem.

But if they try and force the Metro Interface as the standard. I think it will have a slow take up on older kit and most firms will not want to role this out due to the costs and time lost with users having to learn how to navigate around it. So it actually may make firms currently running XP machines look at Windows 7 and not 8.

This ^

I have to tell you, even after writing a review, trying not to be overly negative, it was hella annoying, all the new tweaks and changes just made me more and more frustrated...

However, it will take some work (as in strenuous effort) to become accustomed and comfortable with using Windows 8...

Personally I just put all of the programs I use a lot on the desktop (create shortcut), but even that was a freaking nightmare to figure out how to do!

I was met with so many frustrations I just felt like Microsoft doesn't want Windows 8 to have a functional desktop.

If they put the start button back in there with the metro GUI, that would be great, really...

If they don't, then I dare say that this OS will be mainly a Touchscreen OS, as the OP has suggested..

Win 8 is being developed to do just that! They are trying to build an OS for desktop platform as well as touchscreen OS that they can implement on mobile devices. They've fallen way behind against the likes of IOS and Droid.

As far as I know, the eval version is out. Very buggy. It's windows too, course its annoying!

Keep in mind though guys, this is their attempt to replace Windows Mobile and to provide a desktop OS solution at the same time.

Haha, Well heres a funny thing

My mom ended up chucking Win 8 on her old Core2Quad desktop to see what it was like and i got to sit and play with it for a bit (shes rather tech literate mind)

I was.. actually surprised it wasnt as horrible as i thought, But still cant say I'd want to use it for a mouse/keyboard computer, On a touch screen the interface makes a lot of sense, but on a traditional desktop i just felt it was clunky and a lot less efficient than what we already have.. IE10 was interesting, but i hated that the controls are moved all over the place as opposed to clustered in their old familiar places..

I also found switching apps to be "finicky" as in i had to get the mouse -just- right in order to pull up the side bar to switch apps and such...

It did run very fast on that machine however, And I can appreciate that

From my perspective I think Win 8 is going to have most of its success as a sort of rival towards the iPad/Android-based tablets and things like the Macbook Air, Could be an interesting rival mind you, as you can theoretically leverage the existing x86 windows software (and hopefully microsoft makes migration of x86 program code easy for ARM-based devices, as Win 8 supports ARM) and I actually think that something like the Asus Transformer Prime with Win 8 would be an awesome companion to my desktop

But for desktop computing, unless they massively fix Win 8's inefficient interface for mouse/keyboard users, I'll sadly be sticking with Win 7, As will a lot of people I suspect... Which actually makes me wonder (as Win 8 is still a year out in terms of being released) if Microsoft isnt holding some things back to hype up the Metro user experience and the final shipping version of 8, or one of the final shipping versions of 8, is going to be tailored more for those of us using desktops or working in office environments...

Windows 8's lean thin code with the interface of Win 7 would be a good thing, I think we can all agree on that right? wink.gif

Windows 8 does have the desktop mode. While I do think Metro will only be good on tablets and touch screen pc's, I don't really want it for my desktop. Though Windows 8's desktop mode works just fine
